Hi everybody! Thanks for the helping hand with this nasty little devil.

McAfee seems to recognize, but can't get rid of it.

So far, I turned off system restore, rebooted in safe mode, and ran the following programs in this order:

CCleaner (ran cleaner)
Ad-Aware-SE (full system scan, scan volume for ADS)
SpyBot (scan)
Ewido (complete scan)

This all seemed to slow it down, but it is hanging around like bad breath and is still there.

Here are the goods:

Hi ziawest and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

Try not to ever shut off system restore(unless you are sure you are clean). Remember that an infected restore point is better than none. :tazz:

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe© by noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe -boot
O16 - DPF: {1B802424-417D-09BE-7CB3-09F800E89142} - http://85.255.113.213/1/gdnUS2218.exe
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150...tzip/RdxIE2.cab
O16 - DPF: {5F0E90C4-8716-18FF-6851-59AE544E5AC1} - http://85.255.113.213/1/gdnUS2218.exe

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

AdwareAlert <====This program is considered not to be a trusted Spyware Program, Rogue SpywareList

9. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert

10. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

11. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

12. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

13. Next go to Control Panel click appearance and themes>click Display > Desktop Tab> click Customize Desktop > Web tab > Uncheck anthing in there if present.

14. Run the program CleanUp!

15. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

16. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Hi Excal! Thanks very much for your help with this matter. It is very much appreciated!

Here's what I screwed up: I couldn't find the Ewido scan log on my desktop that I ran in Safe Mode to post per your instructions. So after I rebooted in Normal Mode and did everything else, I re-scanned with Ewido and that's log I posted below. Truly sorry about that.

Okay, here we go:

ActiveScan scan results:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/startpage.amb Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\Favorites\Health
Hacktool:HackTool/Flood Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssysnav32g.dll
Virus:W32/Bagle.ER.worm Not disinfected Local Folders\Deleted Items\[spam] [09_price.zip][06.exe]

Delete the following files and folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\Favorites\Health
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssysnav32g.dll

Let me know how that goes. :) and how everything is running.

Hi Excal!

Thanks again for the incredible help! Okay, I've gone in and deleted those 2 files/folders per your instructions.

So far, no sign of malware popping up again! HOORAY! :tazz:

A couple of issues: :)

I've noticed that since I've gone through this process that the "Turn Off" and "Restart" buttons no longer work when I need to re-boot.

Also, live links that I receive in my email no longer work.

Did I alter some settings in this process that I need to adjust? Thanks very much! What an experience this has been. :)

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

hmmmm, nothing there.

Download WinPFind and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
don't do anything with it yet.

boot into safe mode

Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

reboot

Please post the winpfind log

Greetings Excal! Thank you very much for help and assistance. :) Here we go with the WinPFind logfile:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Lets try this, you will need a valid XP disk.

Click start then run, type chkdsk /f /r then press enter, type Y to confirm for next boot, press enter then reboot.

This will take an hour, it will appear to load normally then either the monitor will show progress or the screen will go blank, do not disturb this.

When it has loaded to the desktop, click start then run, type
sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD and get a blue progress bar, reboot when the bar goes.

When it gets to the desktop, the system files and the hard drive will be as they should

You can check for any improvement now, and then after each step until you have run through them all, if necessary

Click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, click more options then clean up restore points, click confirm, click OK. Then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete, then reboot

If no change, the next thing to do would be a repair install, this will leave data and settings intact

XP Repair

If you are unable to run XP Repair

Alternate XP Repair

Use the last one, Windows Installation CD to repair the current installation, which uses a slightly different method

Beyond this, it could be a hardware fault

The next steps are optional

Get Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run disc clean up then registry clean up then click optimize to run reg defrag, which needs a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Hi Excal! Once again, thanks very much for help, guidance and patience through this process. :tazz:

My best recollection is that WindowsXP came pre-loaded on my desktop without an WindowsXP disc. So I may be dead in the water.

I also noticed today that when I go to a webpage with a .pdf link that when I click on it my Adobe Acrobat Reader no longer opens.

Hi Excal!

Thanks very much for the help. I live in a remote area of New Mexico above 6000 feet on the high desert plains. More coyotes, scorpions, and sagebrush around than copies of XP, but I will see what I can do.
