I believe I had/have the problem described in this thread: http://www.geekstogo...showtopic=87370

A website opened a random picture file without my prompting, that installed the virus. The virus changed my background to display the message mentioned in the above thread. The message was contained in a black box on a blue background. When I tried to use other pictures as the background, or change it from the list, it refused to change. Currently, after running all of the software in the site's list, the black box with the text is gone, but other backgrounds still refuse to show. My background is now a solid blue. Here is a picture of my desktop options.

<img src="http://i3.photobucke...3/desktop.jpg">

Problems I had, but which seem to be gone now, include the following:

Randomly opening files. Once it shut down my computer suddenly, and without prompting. (I know that doesn't fit the description), after that it opened a paint file, where it drew a black squiggly line, or the file contained one, but it disappeared after a moment and left a blank paint file. I closed it. After that it opened one of those black boxes with the white text and entering commands like "ping *sex reference here*" and questionable things, so I closed it.

It changed my homepage to nothing, a blank screen. It added two erotic links to my favorites list, and one folder of them. It also installed some expired antivirus that kept telling me I was infected every five seconds, and that I couldn't run it without buying it, even if I'd wanted to. I deleted that first thing. It came with an uninstall.

Also, I use LiveJournal, and random words in people's journals became blue links. I clicked some, and they didn't seem to load to anywhere.

That should be all the problems I had, but currently seem to have gone away.

When I began the steps the site requires me to take before they'll help me, my connection was fine. As prompted, I ran all programs regardless. The very first one that's supposed to fix my connection messed it up. I've repaired it, but the letter that looks like an i with two signals coming from either side of it is red. It tells me it's disconnected, but the internet works fine. It's just confused, it seems.

Also, since I ran that first program, I've gotten this error message on start up:

<img src="http://i3.photobucke...3/Problem.jpg">

I believe those are my only two problems now. Everything the site asked me to run seems to have cleared it out pretty thoroughly. I appreciate what's been done for me thus far. Here is the information requested, from Ewido, then from Hijack This.

Hello,

You have been dealing with the latest exploit which uses images to get infected with. Microsoft will provide a fix for it asap.
That's why I also suggest you uninstall Google desktop in this time being, because google desktop is enough to invoke the exploit and infect the machine again.

I also recommend you install the temporary patch:
http://castlecops.co...es_the_Day.html

Ok, let's deal with the leftovers now..

I see you have Viewpoint installed..
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [21.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\hitori\LOCALS~1\Temp\21.tmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlps.exe] C:\WINDOWS\atlps.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [21.tmp.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\hitori\LOCALS~1\Temp\21.tmp.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

* Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab > uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

REBOOT!!

* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt which is present on your Homedrive (C:\ in most cases) by using Add Reply.

It could be possible, after reboot that your system is using the windows classic theme again.
To restore this and set it back to XP-theme, rightclick on your desktop > properties > tab Appearances and choose Windows XP style again under windows and buttons.
Click apply and OK.

I just did everything you said, and I rebooted my computer, and then all that showed up was the desktop. The taskbar and icons were gone, and I couldn't right-click. I did Ctrl+Alt+Del, but that wouldn't open the net. I restarted in safe mode, and got the same thing. No taskbar or icons. I restarted in safe mode again and did the system restore to an earlier time. Does that mean I have to do it all again? Would that uninstall the updates and things I've spent hours and hours on already, or should they all still be there?

I'm not sure how to make this google desktop go away either.

Thank you for the help. I'm going to just look around and see how everything's working now while I wait. Sorry things keep happening.

That is strange. Not sure what caused this.. looks like your explorer didn't load. Haven't seen this with smitrem before though..

It's a good idea to perform the onlinescan with Panda only and post the log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

We'll deal with everything manually then if still infected without using smitrem.

After the system restore, I no longer have Hijack This, smitRem or the Trogan Hunter. All updates seem to be in place and everything else is in order. I'll reinstall those, and make an updated Hijack This report. Could you tell me:

1. How to uninstall google desktop. You suggested it, but nothing I try is working.

and

2. You asked for a third report. Smitfiles? I assume I can find this if I hunt around the smitRem folder, after I run the program again?

Hi, don't run smitrem again, because that caused the loss of your explorer.
We'll deal with everything manually afterwards.

You can easily uninstall Google Desktop by going to Start > Programs > Google Desktop > Uninstall Google Desktop.
It could be possible that it's not present there anymore after the system restore. We'll see afterwards.

I only need a new hijackthislog and the log from the panda online scanner.

- ...I already ran it before you posted. My background is stuck on a blue screen again. Sorry. And I just fixed my background, forget that.

We're making progress though. Now I just have to worry about my computer starting properly if I restart again. I'll just stay here for now, and run another panda thing, then post the results of those two. I actually think nothing is wrong with the computer now, assuming it restarts properly. It's a good idea to check though.

ah ok. But you really need that reboot though, otherwise smitrem only does half work.

The panda scan will take another 30-60 minutes. Is it okay if I do that, then the Hijack This, then post the results before I reboot?

Yes ok. After reboot, post the log from smitrem which will be present on your C:\ with the name smitfiles.txt (this only after reboot, not before reboot, otherwise the log won't be complete)

It's not that bad.

Only one leftover in hijackthis you have to check and fix:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Concerning the entries panda shows.. the Spyware Cookies are nothing to worry about.

Next is a false positive:

Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\hitori\Desktop\New Folder\smitRem\smitRem\Process.exe

Because that's a part of smitrem, so I'm going to let the ones from Panda know.

Concerning next:

Possible Virus. Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\hitori\My Documents\hitori\Games\Diablo II\D2CMP.dll
Possible Virus. Not disinfected C:\Program Files\Common Files\aolshare\Coach\ACHtmfu.dll

I think they are false positives as well. However, I have my doubts about next entry:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\aolshare\Coach\ACHtmfu.dll

So I want to be sure here... so can you go to next site:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

On top you'll find: File to upload and scan.
Now browse to the next file:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\aolshare\Coach\ACHtmfu.dll

Click submit and let it scan.
Post the results in your next reply.

By the way, Viewpoint is still present in your log. I already gave you instructions it's better to uninstall it. However, if you really use it and want to keep it, that's ok for me.

- Don't say it like that. I did exactly what you said. It should've been gone, right? I went to Add/Remove programs and got rid of them, just like you told me. I just did it again. Some things changed after I did the system restore. Could they have come back after that?

Here are the results you asked for.

Yes, that can be the cause. So in this case you have uninstall it again via add/remove programs.

Looks like above file you scanned at Jotti is indeed a false positive.

How are things running now?
