[562bruin]

my computer has been infected with the winfixer virus for awhile and i can't get rid of it. i ran the hijackthis program and here is my log for it. i don't know if this means anything to anyone. thanks for your help.

One thing I need you to do first is to place HiJackThis into a permanent folder. The reason for this is so that when HJT makes backups, they will be stored in a safe place.
*Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
* Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
* Extract HijackThis from the zipped file into this new folder.

The first thing we need to Address is that you have the Sony Rootkit installed on your computer. This came from putting DRM-Protected Cds on your computer. This needs to be removed. Please follow the steps from Sony to remove their rootkit:

Once you have gotten that taken care of, lets get that Winfixer!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

Scan with HJT and place a check next to the followign items:

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Once in safe mode, find and delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\

Then, reboot your computer normally, and post a new HJT log.

How is your system running?

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Firefox- Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera is good as well.
  
• Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep malware from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from web browsers, and much more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  
• Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
