This is an 98SE system. GuineIntel,Pentium Processor, 48.0MB RAM,DriveC 1.5GB 960 MB Free, Drive D 1.0 GB 883MB Free. I was noseing around looking for an answer to a pre-existing problem, when I must have accidently changed settings. Since then I do not have an icon for drive E in My Computer. A CD will not play. Drive A sounds different. Floppies will open up, but I can't completely format one. The "working" flag comes on the screen, but does't wave anymore. The red light on the tower stays on all the time. Here is what I was doing: I was in msconfig looking for a way to correct my origional problem(another story) and was doing the "whats this" thing in the Advanced Troubleshooting Settings, and must have checked-unchecked one or more of the 12 items listed. At this time lines4,10,and 12 are checked. Item #6 is shaded and was then also. As fof the system config utility, general is normal-config sys is blank-Autoexec.bat has SET Path=%Path% and it is checked. As for the other 3 items at the top,everything is checked in each section. I do not know what else to tell you, but if you let me know I will try and answer any questions. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter. Harold Schmidt

I'm guessing your CD drive requires drivers that are loaded from your config.sys file. Have you unchecked this in msconfig, or changed any settings within config.sys? Also, if you choose "Normal Startup" in msconfig, does your CD drive work?

admin is right on this just explaining a little more what may be going on.
if in your msconfig normal is not checked it could be only loading the the minimal to run windows and your system not loading all the drives for your hardward cdroms,floppy drives ect. make sure that the normal is checked and it gets applied then reboot your system. let us know if that fixs it if not we can look at some other things.

Hi: This is hal. I hope I am replying correctly. The start up selection is normal, however it had been on selective with lines 2,4,5,and 6 checked. I restarted after changing to normal. I was hoping to correct my first problem. The config.sys screen is blank. Nothing,nada. I am still wondering if I goofed up in the advance section, which I mentioned in my origional post. What I failed to ask is-what should be checked/unchecked in that advanced part.I have a feeling that is where I messed up. Thank you again, and I am hoping I am responding correctly. I need to spend some time in the Help section so I can get a bit more up to speed. Please advise. hal.

To: tazz1964-BINGO!! Followed the bouncing ball and restarted. Everything I goofed up is back up to speed. Could not completely erase/format a floppy, but that is low priority at this time. Put my Encarta Encyclopedia in and away it went. I have been like a kid looking at a washing machine running that won't let him have his security blanket. You have one happy camper down here in the south Texas boonies. Thank you so very much. After I catch my breathand make some notes, I would like to ask another question. To tazz1964: I was just going to note to you one thing that I noticed for what ever it is worth. After getting everything squared away and writing to you, when I went to shut down the machine kept restarting. I had noticed this before so I have had to go back into the advanced settings and check the line "Disable fast shutdown". Now I can shut down completely, and everything is going when I restart. Thought I would mention this as it is not in accordance with the instructions. Maybe it is in this machine. Will see after tackeling the next problem. (origional).Thanks again. hal.

yes the disable fast shutdown should be checked. if you look at windows xp form area there is a post there (computer keeps restarting) Where adim is also saying that it needs to be checked.
