Hello,
I cennot getthe validation tool to update and therefore cannot get the latest updates for I/E. The last updates were 8 days ago. Using XosftSpy I found that a regitry key for windows update had been disabled. I quarantined and deleted it, but still cannot get the validation tool to update. The name of the install is KB892130 fails with 0x80070005. I believe this is a registry issue, but cannot locate it. Here is a log from hijackthis:

Hello there,
Thank you kindly for your help. I ran a system restore this morning back to Feb. 20th which was the last time windows update ran correctly. I can go out Microsoft's website and manually download some fixes. However, Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) cannot be located. I saw a message yeterday that said something t the effect that my windows update had been disabled. Not sure how to proceed?? The file you requested has been attached.

OK, this is going to sound stupid, but try it anyway


Go to the windows update page and on the left hand side. Click "Use Administrator Options"

Under "Update multiple operating systems" section click "windows update catalog".

When a new browser window opens up, on the left hand side click on "Windows update".

This will take you back to the windows update and will either tell you have an error or give you the chance to click "Scan for update".

If you get an error, don't worry. Click TOOLS in the IE bar and choose windows update again

Click the scan all button again and once the scan is complete, click on "install"

I do not know why this will workbut it seems to purge a corrupt genuine product file...it tried it on a known working system and it cleared the genuine product tool and reinstalled it

That does not appear to resolve the issue. However, I did not see the scan all am fairly certainthat a registry value was changed that is checked for permision to download, but alas this is just my theory. Do yu have any other ideas???

Well it is XP home, but I use it for work. I have ben thinking that it may be easiest just to get a new version of XP. I have a work PC as well, had no trouble with the validation tool.

to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oldRoot2

My system will not allow me to rename the CatRoot2 file. When I quarantined the file using XoftSpy it said something to the extent that one of my registry keys had been altered. It said it was for access to windows update. It said that it would restore the original value when quarantined. So I though I was done. Went out and ran update and it failed. So I went into the log and deleted it. I wish I would have taken some notes on it as well. So far I have checked my permissions inside of registry edit for OWNER, ADMIN, and USER. They all look correct.

try rebooting in into safe mode and log in on THE administrator accout

All the posts from yesterday are gone. Did I miss something. Well if you are still there. Yesterday, you said to go out and rename C:\windows\system32\CatRoot2 to OldRoot2. Well something has its hooks into that and will not allow me to rename it. Any ideas?
