Hi, hope I can explain this well!

We have a Win 98 platform, built by a local company. I was deleting printer driver/.exe files and digital camera driver/.exe files using the add/remove programs function. The computer requested a restart. After the restart, I got this error" Error Loading Explorer.exe You Must Reinstall Windows" and was then informed that the windows\system\MSVCRT.DLL was missing.

Here are some problems.. my floppy drive does not work. I don't have a Win98 boot CD.

I currently have the computer sitting in command prompt mode, that is the only way I can access the computer at this time.

Hope that made sense, a bit hard to describe! TIA... ??

Yes, I have a second computer with a burner that i am using right now.

Ok go to this site and download the file
then we will work out how to put it on your computer
Msvcrt.dll
Without a working floppy it might make it a bit akward so don't burn the file just yet
I might need you to burn some extra files with it.
I take it your floppy has completley had it?

I already downloaded that file earlier. So ready with that task. And yes, my floppy has bit the dust.

restart the computer and start tapping F8
choose startup safe mode does this give you access to your cd drive if yes then copy the file to C:\Windows\system

Reboot back to normal mode

When I try Safe Mode I get the same error. I can only get in thru the Command Prompt Only option.

What is in blue is what you type what is in red is what you do
can you read from your cd at the command prompt ?
Put a cd in that you know works and at the prompt
C:\windows>D: enter
Does this give you a D:> prompt
I am assuming you have only the C drive and your cd drive is D

Yes, I have the D: for the CD drive.

ok with the file burned to a cd put it in the cd drive
D:>c: "Enter"
cd windows "Enter"
cd system enter
This should give you the the prompt C:\windows\system>
If Yes then ren msvcrt.dll msvcrt.old enter
c:\windows\system>D: enter
D:>copy *.* c: enter
Should say 1 file copied
Reboot.

I have to race off to work will check when I get home

When I typed " ren msvcrt.dll msvcrt.old enter" the reply was "File not found - msvcrt.dll".

Ok then lets copy it over
when you start the computer again change back to c:\windows\system>
then go to D:> then copy the file as I showed you

Ok, your rule #2 says when in doubt do nothing.. so I am seeking some clarification. I am not as up on DOS commands as I would like to be.

I am not certain what exactly I should type into at the D:\

Glad you stopped
Ok to make the copy easy we want to 1st make the C drive where we want it so when you
start the computer as before and I assume it is starting at the prompt C:\windows>
If yes
C:\windows>cd system enter
C:\windows\system>D: enter
D:>copy *.* enter
This will copy all the files from your cd (which should only be 1 file)
It should say 1 file copied if yes eject the cd and reboot.
If you get a message asking you to overwrite answer y enter
If you do not have only 1 file on this cd then let me know before you copy, I think you do only have the file we need on the CD.
If the computer does not start at C:\windows> and just starts at C:> then the 1st command is
c:> cd windows enter

Thanks for your reply. I did as you asked, and my reply is "file not found *.* 0 files copied" I verified on my other computer that the MSVCRT.DLL file is on this CD. I have 2 CD ROM drives on the broken computer, and I tried both of them, in case I was mixed up on which was the D drive. I tried to change to an E: drive, but it tells me that is invalid.
