I have a Acer Travelmate 800 Laptop and i am trying to network to a Sony VA10 laptop

it doesn't work i ahev started a workgroup called WORKGROUP but it shows the VA10 (on itself) And the Acer laptop shows nothing.

They both have wireless but i use a crossover cable to cennect.

they both dont show their I.P adresses, it says its not available.

The Travelmate 800 has no ethernet controller or network controller drivers installed would this be the problem

Hi Michael,

How are you trying to Network? Via a router, hub, switch, or just a peer-to-peer network (laptop-to-laptop)?

The Travelmate 800 has no ethernet controller or network controller drivers installed would this be the problem

That would be the best place to start. Can you get hold of the required drivers, and install them?

they both dont show their I.P adresses, it says its not available.

On both laptops, please goto Start --> Run --> type CMD and press OK --> then type: IPCONFIG /ALL - please post the results here by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum. Alternately, you can save your information to a text file by using the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL > C:\ipconfig.txt -- navigate to that text file, and copy/paste the information from it.

Thanks,
Dan.

Hi Michael Bollingmore,

I think you should run the network setup wizard. Do you have an internet connection.

Do what dan.G said and find both of the ip addresses and then goto start ---->cmd--> and then "ping 192.168.#.#. You will know what the ip adresses are so fill in the blanks. Also try renaming the computer by going to my computer properties. This way you can do the start cmd ping (computer name). That should make it easier.
