New build.. monitor stuck at 16 colors

I started building a computer and i have everything installed except the screen looks horrible. The monitor seems to be stuck in 16 colors and at 640 by 480 pixels for some reasons. I'm running windows 98 se on it right now.

I'm guessing windows 98 is the root to your problem. But also you have to install the drivers for your video card. Should be able to download them from the manufacturer's website, windows update may have them or your motherboard cd.

If you install XP it should solve your problem.

(Not sure if 98 even has windows update).
