hi!

i discovered winfixer on my laptop this past weekend, and have literally spent the past 2 days trying to remove it. i have taken the following steps 5x over, to no avail:
1. run --> "cleanmgr"
2. adaware se scan, clean, and reboot as many times as needed until the scan runs clean
3. spybot scan, fix, and reboot until the scan runs clean
4. mcafee virus scan (tried housecall and panda, too)
5. avg virus scan
6. mcafee stinger

i thought i was finally clean as of last night until i jumped back online this morning to work (i do graphic design / web development, and the internet is crucial to my work) and the popups came back to haunt me.

can anyone help me? thank you so much in advance..

ashley

Hello Ashley and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection plus some other stuff. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then Program Files.
In the menu bar, go to File>New>Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can right-click on and rename to HJT or HijackThis. Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Cut ‘n’ Paste your HijackThis.exe into it.

You appear to have two antivirus (AV) programmes running; AVG and McAfee. This is bad practice and will cause slowness and probably conflicts too. Please uninstall one of them.

VundoFix.exe is a removal tool developed to remove Virtumonde infections. To use the tool follow the instructions below.
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

hello, and thank you so much for helping me!

i should add that i have tried vundofix a few times, as you will see in my vundofix.txt log, and each time i have run the program, it scans fine, lists the files fine, but when i select "remove vundo", i get a blue screen that says "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.... etc etc etc" plus at the bottom the following info (it seemed important... :tazz:
Technical Information
STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x000000003, 0x820C17F0, 0x820C1964, 0x805C7478)

.... dump of physical memory, etc, etc, etc...

so, i haven't been able to get past that point. anyway, vundofix.txt below, and new hjt logfile below that:

again, thank you so very much!

Hello again Ashley

I noticed that you had clues to Vundofix being used before. Did it do it again?

Let's try a couple of things:

In order to reset your permissions which I think might be screwed-up you need to go to

START>RUN> and then cut and paste in the lines below (all one line but too wide to fit), then hit enter and wait until it finishes. It will appear to be doing nothing at all, but be patient and just wait until it finishes.

Here's the text:

%SystemRoot%\System32\SECEDIT.EXE /configure /cfg %systemroot%\repair\secsetup.inf /db %SystemRoot%\Security\Database\secsetup.sdb /verbose

The other thing we might try is this:

Please run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
Reboot normally

Download VirtumundoBeGone

Open VirtumundoBeGone by secured2k, and follow the on-screen instructions to sweep your PC for infections. When it has finished it will save a log to the desktop. Please post it in your reply.

hi again!

when i did start--> run--> %SystemRoot%\System32\SECEDIT.EXE /configure /cfg %systemroot%\repair\secsetup.inf /db %SystemRoot%\Security\Database\secsetup.sdb /verbose

i get this message: cannot find C:\Windows\System32\SECEDIT.EXE

When I run the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) it seems as if it's scanning, but I don't get any prompts telling me so. And the computer freezes a bit... I had to just shut it down.

So, I'm not sure where to go from here...?

thanks again for your time and knowledge!

What about the Virtumundobegone tool, did that do any good?

Also, the SFC fix, give it time to scan. Remember that malware infested PC's need lots of time to operate

Hello again Ashley

Let's take a peek below the surface and see what's hiding.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

hi!

i was unable to run the whole scan - it kept getting caught up at this prompt -

Cannot open file C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\QSLLPSVCShare

The scan wouldn't run past that - I waited quite some time (at least a 1/2 hour) and nothing was happening.

I copied the results as stated below:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello again Ashley

I see other people have the same problem with that file and WinPfind. I have no idea what it is. Can you navigate to it and see if there are any clues. It looks like a folder; there may be some files inside that can be traced. You may have to show all files please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Here's the path: C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\QSLLPSVCShare

In the meantime, let's hit those stubborn Vundo files.

Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcbeg.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcbeg.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcd.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Now, start The Avenger programme by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • Upon reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy & paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add Reply

hi!

//////////////////////////////////////////
Avenger Pre-Processor log
//////////////////////////////////////////

Error: selected file does not appear to be a valid script.
Error code: 1813

i cannot seem to get past this.

earlier, i saw that mcafee had recognized this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcd.dll, but of course cannot remove it. i tried to remove it manually in windows explorer (had to show hidden files and uncheck "hide protected operating system files", and was actually able to see the gegcd.dll file in that location, but when i tried to delete the file it says that it's being used by another program. the only thing open at that time was mcafee, so i closed that down, but i was getting the same prompt when i tried to delete it.

thoughts...?

ah, sorry... the "gegcd.dll" file i referenced in my last post was a typo - i meant to type "geBcd.dll" :whistling:

as i was saying, i can see this file in win explorer - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcd.dll, but can't manually remove it. would i be able to do this in safe mode or DOS?

anyway, mcafee has been recognizing the gebcd.dll as a PUP for the last day or so, which it has never caught it before, but of course cannot remove it.

i should note, too, that i downloaded ewido anti-malware last night, and ran 3 scans until they ran clean. it actually caught over 100 infected files in my Cookies, which is strange because i clean that folder out every couple of days!

not sure where to go next... further thoughts?

Hello again Ashley

Since my last post I have been in touch with Swandog46, the creator of Avenger, to try and find out what is wrong with the script. His reply to me says that the script is good and questions whether or not you are following the instructions correctly. The script must start with an instruction. Your latest HJT log shows just that Vundo infection.

What were you able to find out about this: C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\QSLLPSVCShare

In this fix, I am going to use Avenger with more instructions.

Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Registry keys to delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\gebcd

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcd.dll

Files to replace with dummy:

5. Please copy & paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add Reply

hi again!

i think this one worked... keeping my fingers crossed, at least!

regarding this file - C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\QSLLPSVCShare - i ran ccleaner on my system a couple of nights ago... maybe ccleaner cleared up the issue with that file?

regardless, it seems to have removed that stubborn dll file!!! :whistling::help::blink:

again, thank you so very much for your help, and i look forward to your reply!

ashley
