Hi,
I hope you can help me. I am running Windows XP with SP2. I use dialup to connect to the internet. Recently, when I connect, Internet Explorer won't connect. It opens, but states "Cannot Find Server, this page cannot be displayed". Netscape, however, will work. Also Outlook Express works, but will quit working after anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours. The error I get when it stops working is TC/ICP Error (I hope I remembered the letter correctly). Also, at this point, Netscape won't work either. Putty, will still work, and I still have an internet connection.
I first found your site when my computer was infested with pop-up ads and other spyware. I downloaded clean up, spybot, ewido, ad aware-se and trojan hunter. They took care of everything at the time. (Thank you very much!) I have the current definitions for all of these programs as of yesterday, and they run clean. Here is a hijackthis file from this morning. Thank you for your help!
Beth

avezan,

Go to Start > Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below services:

.NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, under the General tab click the Stop button, then click the drop-down box to change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Open HiJackThis, click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (make sure there are NO spaces before or after the name):

.NET Connection Service

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.

Post a new HiJackThis log after it reboots and let me know if you received any error messages.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BestPopUpKiller] C:\Program Files\BestPopUpKiller\BestPopupKiller.exe /startup <=== this is considered a rogue program due to some of its practices - I would recommend removing it, and I'll make some suggestions when you're clean for better programs
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\respal.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

BestPopupKiller - if you follow my advice to remove it

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\BestPopUpKiller

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

c:\windows\system32\respal.dll

After that, Reboot.

Please post a new hijackthis log for review.

Thanks,

Hi Sari,
Thanks for your help.
No error messages after the first HJT log, before checking and fixing.
But I did get an error, which implied that it could not fix the respall.dll It said it copied the error message to a clipboard, but I could not find a copy. I think it said "error#5".
Under Add/Remove Programs, Best popup killer was not present.
I did not recognize the program "sysnet".
Using Windows Explorer, Best PopupKiller folder was not present. Also respall.dll folder was not present. Here is the latest HJT log. IE is still not connecting.
Thank you,
Beth

avezan,

There is more items I'd like to fix in your hijackthis log. I tried to fix it already and it didn't go away, so I'm going to have you do it in safe mode. You may want to print these instructions, since you won't have access to them while you're in safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Re-open Hijackthis and scan. Place a check mark next to the following item:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

With all other windows closed, click Fix Checked.

Reboot into normal mode.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
If you have trouble with activescan, then please try one of these:

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

+++++

If you are unable to run the activeX Antivirus Scanners, lets try this Java based solution from Trend Micro.

Thanks,

sari

Hi Sari,
Unfortunately, failed on all tasks. I checked the R3-URLSearchHook:... and "Fixed Checked" in Safe Mode, but it is back again in the new HJT log.

I was unable to run the ActiveX scans because of my original problem: I can't get Internet Explorer to work. The MicroTrend scanner also requires either IE or Mozilla. I am using Netscape, but it has a limited time that it will work. Anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours. I will try to download Mozilla, but it may not download before I am disconnected from Netscape. The computer is running slower and slower, and I am using dialup.

A few thoughts: I recently (a few weeks ago) installed the latest version of Earthlink Total Access, a dialup program. It comes with a "Protection Center" as well as other features that I do not like. When I first installed it, it wiped out my "favorites" in Internet Explorer. I wonder if this could be causing other problems. Also, my husband was playing around wtih the Task Manager and deleting processes that he didn't recognize. He deleted one process that completely cured the machine. IE ran as usual and the machine ran very, very fast. But, when the internet connection was lost and then reconnected, the same problems occured. We have not been able to figure out which process that was that he killed.

Here is a current HJT log. I will try to download Mozilla, and try to run the Micro Trend scan. But I would appreciate any other suggestions that you may have.

Thanks,
Beth

I was able to download Mozilla, but still not able to run the scan from Trend Micro. I deleted Earthlink Total Access and a few other processes running in the background. I think that the error I get from Outlook Express is significant. TCP/IP error. This occurs after the program has been running successfully for about 20-30 minutes. I still cannot connect with IE. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do. Here is the HJT log from today.

Ok, I fixed it. I was getting a little desperate, and even called another company with "geek" in the name. I paid them $100, and their solution was to re-install windows. I certainly didn't need to pay $100 for someone to tell me to do that! But I found the problem myself. One of the settings for my dialup connection was wrong. I don't know how it got changed, maybe it was originally a malware or maybe it was the Earthlink total access that was interfering. Anyway, I have cleaned up my computer considerably, and it is running faster, and so far no problems. Thank you for your help. Case closed. :whistling:

avezan,

Good news - I'm glad you fixed it. I was about to post and have you look at your network settings, since a TCP/IP error indicated something was wrong there. I notice when you got rid of the earthlink stuff, that entry we couldn't remove left your log also. Since everything is working again, I will close this thread.
