Graphics problems

I just got Elder Scrolls IV and was happilly playin it for about 2 hours and then i ran into problems.

Something caused a fatal system error and windows shut down. When i rebooted it windows pointed to my Radeon 9700 pro. I then tried to update my drivers with the catalyst 6.3 bundle and the installation hung for about 20mins and was unresponsive. So i terminated it in task manger and tried again. The next time the installation appeared to go smoothly but when i restarted the pc just as windows was loading up it crashed again. This time windows pointed to an unkown device driver.

I tried booting in safe mode and unistalling and reinstalling all ati drivers and software to no avail. I don't know where to go from here any help would be appreciated.
