I am home for spring break and my parents have been complaining about their computer for a while now. Well when I came home I discovered that their norton liveupdate had been turned off for some time and they had this trojan and about 20 other things. I don't know what everything is, so any help would be appreciated... I can't get rid of the trojan and the others who posted about it didn't really get any feedback that would help me since it seemed so individual.... please please help ASAP!

Before I did HiJack This! I went to msconfig and enabled everything since I had disabled a few things to make startup a little faster [weatherbug, yahoo, etc]

glasskitten,
Go here and download and install SuperShredder: http://www.analogx.c...ystem/shred.htm
Configure SuperShredder to appear on your "Send To" menu when you right click on a file. Disable System Restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to properties, then to the System Restore tab and check the "Turn off system restore" checkbox, then click apply. Using Explore, find the location of the file on your drive, C:\WINDOWS/LAUNCHURL.EXE and right click on it and send it to the SuperShredder. This should remove the file. Remember to turn System Restore on again. This worked for me with the same trojan infection when nothing else would.
Go here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Do a free scan afterwards to see if this file shows up...TROJ_ZAPCHAST.J
If not, then you are good to go!
I have just recently installed this AntiSpyware program and it seems to be working great so far...you may wish to try it.
Go here: http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx
MS AntiSpyware can be configured to scan and delete malicious content automatically, similar to your Norton AntiVirus program. That may be a plus for your folks who may not be as adept a solving computer problems as you are!
Good Luck! :tazz:

That would be great if I could get it to work.

I downloaded the shredder and tried that already because I saw you told someone else with the same problem to do that.

I download the shredder. I click on it. I get the hour glass cursor and then nothing happens, it never opens. It refuses. =(

Also....

After I get rid of the trojan? How do I get rid of everything else? I know there is more there that needs to be removed because something is constantly trying to change the homepage.... Mom has spysweeper on here and it notifies me and stops it from doing that, but its kind of frustrating. What needs to go? And what can I do?

glasskitten,
Are you not able to install the SuperShredder after download? Did you disable the System Restore before trying to shred the file? System Restore keeps a backup of the file and will not let you access the file unless it is disabled. Have you tried the MS AntiSpyware to clean your system? It seems to be the only thing I currently have at my disposal to keep my system clean. It took me a long time to get rid of all the Malware, Spyware, etc. on my machine. I see your parents are running XP Home Edition. Has it been updated to Service Pack2? I even decided to install the Mozilla Firefox browser, which seems to have lessened the attacks. I am not a full on staff geek here at GeeksToGo, and have only been a member for a few days now. I posted a HighJack log and did not receive a response to my LAUNCHURL.EXE Trojan infection. It was only through doing research from the resources I found on the site that I was able to rid my system the way I described to you. If you can get a response from a team member to read your log, more power to you! I do know that they are swamped with all these pathetic, malicious attacks. I know that it is frustrating, but the bad part is that it will probably get worse before it gets any better. Microsoft has released the beta version of the AntiSpyware to try and address the problem prior to the release of IE 7 this summer, which is supposed to more fully, address this very issue. I wish you the best of luck and hope that my limited knowledge can be of some help to you. :tazz:

Best regards,
SierraBear

glasskitten,
I looked at your log and did a bit of research. I would run HighJackthis and check these entries and run a fix. Then reboot and run HighJackthis again, then save and post a new log.
