Ubuntu 9.10 is, in summary, awful. Its looks are ancient and it isn't really user friendly, so I hope 10.04 will be the 'change' they claim, but it needs 256MB RAM. If you have a low spec PC, I would suggest Linux Mint 8 (it will be a bit slow, but it is simple to use) or the awesomely customizable gOS (thinkgos.com) which defaulty looks like an old version of OS X and is built on an old ubuntu version (8.10?). I used this for ages on a low power laptop and it worked fine and was great. Pity they don't seem to be working on a newer version :)

And yes I realise that the previous posts are really old, but i'm sort of 'updating the choice' for other people nowadays.
