windows explorer problem

Whenever i use windows explorer to look for something i notice that my "explorer bar" (the bar on the left that gives you options and info on the file) is missing... Its starting to bug me. whenever i try to turn it on it geves me history or favorites but never the default windows bar that i want. if anyone knows how to turni it on id appriciate the help. I have Windows XP.

In Windows Explorer, click VIEW --> EXPLORER BAR --> Then choose what you want to go there.
