all of a sudden, when I try to access a website from the ..file, open area of internet explorer nothing happens. I have to "x" it off and "not responding" comes up and I have to close the browser. We don't remember downloading anything recently.

So basically, I cannot access any websites that are not listed in my favorites. I can't even access a site from any email links.

Any thoughts? I have searched several data bases with no luck. Micrsoft wants minumum $30 bucks to ask.

Any good sites to check for help? I have run virus checks, spyware checks. Nothing. I even did the restore option to a month ago. I just don't know where to look for the settings or what setting to check.

Thanks for any advice.

I do not understand from the FILE > OPEN area....you mean you want to open locally stored files?

what happens when you click a link in email?

Thanks for the response.

Now, I can click on a link in an email and my browser will open and go to the site. It wasn't doing this earlier. Perhaps some of the things I did today helped.

But..when I open IE (my browser) and type in www."whatever" it will not link to that site. It just freezes up and when I "x" off I get not responding error and have to close browser. This also happens if I use the address bar and then "go". If I link from "my favorites" the browser will go right to the site.

Basically, right now, I can not go to any web site that is not listed in my favorites or contained in an email.

ok, I think I got you now....I have an idea, but let's check something first.

Please run hijackthis (see link in my signature), then save a log and AS A TEXT FILE (FILE > SAVE AS) then ATTACH IT (do not post) to your next post.

We do not like to post hijackthis logs in sections other than the malware forum as we do not want to encourage people to post malware issues in this forum.

I am not looking for malware. I am looking for what programs or combinations of programs might cause this behavior. If I notice any malware, I will redirect you to the malware forum.

If you post a hijackthis log in this forum, several trusted techs will come to your house and eat all of your Ritz crackers, Cheeze Doodal and any sweet pickles you have in your fridge. We will also put our feet up on all of your coffee tables. This is no joke. We'll do it. It's not pretty.

You better stay away from my pickles!!!!!!!!! I am a bit of a novice when it comes to the inner workings of a program, but will try to do what you said.

did this start very recently -- after a windows update, perhaps?

Windows recently released a security patch to plug a hole that was being used by HP's share to web application, which you have loaded at startup

use hijack to remove

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe

(select and hit fix)

reboot.

See if that fixes the issue

Tried that. No change. Thanks for trying. I have auto updates on so it is possible that an update could have been installed before the problem started. I don't really know.

It looks like it started about last Thursday. It was the same day that my wife opened a "my space" file. Could that be related? Thanks again, Bud.

you have three other hp settings (the save to web was most likely)

try removing them as well

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb09.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CamMonitor] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\Unload\hpqcmon.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Acme.PCHButton] C:\PROGRA~1\HPINST~1\plugin\bin\pchbutton.exe

I did them. No change. I am turning in for the night. I appreciate all the suggestions. If you want to try some more, just post them and I will be able to do them early a.m. or mid afternoon tommorrow (Wed.)

Thanks again, Bud.
