Can't load any of my programs - malware symptom?

I have a friend's laptop running win xp and I cannot open any of the programs e.g. win explorer, control panel, search etc on a normal boot. When I go to safe mode I get the same results, unless I go to msconfig.exe and disable all of the startup items. However, when I boot normally after that, I still have the same problem.

I ran Ewido and it removed 20 infections, but the problem persists. The bigger problem is that I cannot access the internet with the laptop to download updates for Ewido or AVG so I am using stock installs of these programs.

you are running bearshare, which is a P2P program. Not very good. You need to uninstall it before we can proceed.

You are running McAfee. Can you update that?

OK I have uninstalled BearShare, LimeWire and Winfixer 2006. When I boot to safe mode, there are 2 user accounts - Administrator and Dana (computer owner). If I go into Administrator I can access Windows explorer and control panel etc. However when I log in as Dana, no programs will open.

I cannot connect to the internet so updating McAfee is not an option at this point. Here is a new HJT logfile with all startup services enabled.

I don't see anything malware-related off hand but since you have been using those two programs, you are extremely susceptible to problems.

I also see you are running Norton and Mcafee. Is one a firewall? If they are both running as anti-viral programs, one also needs to be uninstalled. Having two antiviral programs can mess things up.

I know you can't update Ewido or anything else...but each time you run Ewido, does it find items? Do you have Adaware downloaded? Can you run that? Can you download it onto a disc and then run it on the infected machine.

Please disable AOLSpyware, McAfee antispyware and Norton Antispyware and Microsoft Spyware during this fix.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot.

Go to start>>accessories>>system tools>>and press disc cleanup.

Reboot and post a new log.
