Hi,

My computer got hit with a virus (Spy sheriff + more) last night and I think I have removed the bulk of it using your detailed advice. However it is still slow and there are three noticeable problems...

1) The desktop background crashes when you right-click on it (was plain blue after the virus(s) hit, changed after spybot was used)

2) The hard drive is continuously spinning, similar to as if it would during an AVG scan. Including the time that the wireless card is unplugged.

3) I cannot turn my windows firewall back on AT ALL. It says ( We're sorry. The security centre could not turn on Windows Firewall (to try turning on the firewall yourself...)

Cheers

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :whistling:

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

First we must disable Spybot's Teatimer function, otherwise it will interfer with the fix by Hijackthis.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Shell] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00003.exe"

==========

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

A) Can't turn firewall on (are there any other options for the time being?)

&

B) Crashes when I right click on the desktop. Can use other programs, just not the graphical environment (i think). by this I mean that I can still [Alt-Tab] between them

Thanks a bundle for your help :whistling:
I'd be lost otherwise!

We'll take these one at a time.

The trojan that AVG found is in your system restore files.
Flush your system restore, this will delete any restore points that you have but it will also make sure that any malware hiding in system restore will be booted off.

Turn off System Restore:
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer, turn it back on and create a restore point.

Create a restore point:
  • Click Start and point to All Programs.
  • Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
  • In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a
restore point" and click the Next button.
  • Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After
cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

===============

Download the following reg file to your desktop by right clicking on the link, and selecting save as.

http://windowsxp.mvp...haredaccess.reg

Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry.
Now reboot your computer.

After your computer restarts click Start -> Run -> cmd
Type in this command and hit enter: NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall
See if you can now turn on Windows Firewall.

===============

The right click issue may be caused by an older version of Divx.
I need to see a different type of log from Hijackthis
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on "Open the Misc Tools section".
  • Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
  • Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Place the content of that file here in your in your next reply.

===============

AVG should now come up clean. Let me know about your firewall.

Hmmm....let's see if we can find out what's causing the crash. It's got to be a context menu item.

First, right on the desktop to recreate the error. Then let's find out why.

Click Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc

Look in SYSTEM and APPLICATIONS for the event that was recorded when the crash you recreated occured.

Double click on anything you see with a red X, press the Copy button, and then paste it here in your next reply.

Hey dude,

Thanks for the help. I got a split second to go through what you described early in the week, it did crash.
However, when I got another chance to go through it, it seems as if the problem has stopped !

So I thankyou very much for your assistance!

That's good to hear! :whistling:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
