I bought my nice shiny 360 yesterday and I have connected it using the provided ethernet cable into my PC. My PC is connected wirelessly to my DSL Modem/Router downstairs (Belkin 125Mbps).
I have followed the bg guide and it all works perfectly until part 7 of "XBOX 360 SETUP AND CONFIGURATION", the part where the Xbox actually finds the computer. When it fails it asks if I would like to test the connection, and when I do so the error occurs when it tries to identify the IP address. Opening the more details bit it tells me that the console was unable to negotiate a lease with my DCHP server.
I have DHCP enabled on my router, and have not really struggled to add computers in the past.
Both of the connections fail on this point (connecting to Xbox Live and Media Connect). I have setup my conections on the PC to support ICS and I have tried it without any firewalls.
Does this mean my console is connected to an ad-hoc network? The details things says that if it is then I will get this message, but it does not tell me how to assign a working IP.
I have tried making my IP on the computer static, and succeeded in doing so whilst keeping my internet connection working.
I have also managed it a slightly different way, but then I had problems with the gateway rather than the IP.
Please rescue me!
