Hi All,

Great web site.

I have ran through the beginners start page of what to install and run before posting a HJT log into the Forums. So I've ran all the spyware programs and cleaner etc.

I had VCODEC and all its typical programs running. But the spyware programs cleaned up *MOST* of it, the only symptoms that I still seem to be suffering from is this:

IE6's start page is always: "http://www.theguardservices.com". When I ping it, it resolves to: 85.255.115.170. After some brief Google searches, a couple of sites have blacklisted this IP address as being related to fake spyware removal tools etc. And that's exactly what this state page shows up for me.
I have attached a screenshot of the start page, so you can see what it looks like.

I absolutely cannot get this start page to go away! If I change the start page setting to anything else, that never works. What even started happening was after a few times of navigating (manually) to the page I wanted as my start page, that then started redirecting straight to this theguardservices.com page again. I've looked in my hosts file, and there's nothing in there, in fact its almost empty like the standard windows one.

SpyBot S&D seems to pick up VCODEC still and points to a file called ncompat.tlb, and it removes it. But it keeps coming back and finding it again. Even after it removes it, my IE6 start page is always still the corrupt hacker one.

OK few more things to do

Please remove Spybot for the moment we can resintall when done, Go to Add/Remove programs to remove it, It will interfer with the changes we are trying to make to get the last bit cleaned up,

Please restart HJT put a check next to the following, close all open windows and click “Fix Checked”

Will there be a time soon when all computers come with a second processor as standard, just purely dedicated for running all the anti-virus/malware scanning software

Download Spyware Blaster

Keep AD-Aware. and Spybot 1.4 handy, Check them for updates prior to running and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

For an added check run an online virus scan, you can use one of the 2 below,
TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, A handy tool to do this
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
