Hello everyone.

I'm traveling for business and I think I picked up a virus last night in my hotel (computer wise...lol), it was actually early this morning.

My symantic AntiVirus popped up and said that it detected "adaware.popupper" or something to that effect, it is stored now in my Histories under "threat". It is a very weird deal, I got back from dinner tonight and I got a spam email that was from an email that is similar to my work email. What can I do to scan my computer to get rid of this thing?

Here are some more details....when I go into my Symantic AntiVirus and click on history, then threats it has a little icon with a red X....usually something you see when a picture doesn't download properly.....then it says the following:

Risk: Adaware.Popupper, Action: Partial, Count: 2, Filename: mediaview[1].cab, Threat Type: Adaware, (location, computer, user), Status: Infected, (current location), Primary Action: Quaranteened, Secondary Action: Leave Alone, Logged By: Auto-Protect Scan, Action Description: Quarantine was partially successful.........

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Grant

Hi Gdogg6

Welcome to G2G! :whistling:

You have Hijack This running from your Temporary Internet Files folder. It will not function properly from there so I need you to redownload it according to the following instructions so that it is in it's own permanent folder.

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

* Before you post the new Hijack This log, do the following:

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, click on the "Save Report" button an save the results of the scan to your desktop.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

* Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here.

I'm in the process of doing the ActiveScan online virus scan.

Quick question, I hope I'm doing this right!

It directed me to a couple places and the scan is actually being done in a window that is titled pandasoftware.com - Panda ActiveScan 5.53.00

When it finishes I will post the new Hijack log, the results from this scan, and the "save list" deal from Hijack this.

Am I on the right track?

By the way, the scan asked me which area of my computer to scan and I selected "my computer", I hope that is right.

All that found was some tracking cookies. We'll remove those and do another scan to see if it finds anything more serious.

* First go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall these:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the "Delete Cookies" button to clear all cookies.

* Run Kaspersky online virus scan here.

After the updates have downloaded, click on the "Scan Settings" button.
Choose the "Extended database" for the scan.
Under "Please select a target to scan", click "My Computer".
When the scan is finished, Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from Kaspersky scan

Let me know if I should do anything at this point. Thank you so much for your help.

I am having some problems with my home computer as well. Norton messes with my email and when I go to shut the computer down it takes 5 minutes or so for it finally to shut off.

Thank you very much!

Looks to me like you are good to go unless you have a specific problem we need to deal with.

Flrman1,

Thank you so much for all of your help! I have yet to have that weird email come through on my work computer.

If you would please take a look at my home computer now, I followed the same original instructions that you gave me for my work computer. My home computer is very slow at times and when I go to shut my computer down it takes several minutes for it to go through that process and finally turn off.

I also need some advice, I purchased this computer almost one year ago. I bought it from Best Buy and they recommended that I sign up for Norton and Spy Sweeper, I did so. I've had some problems with Norton slowing up my computer (I think). I keep getting renewal notices, should I renew both, neither, or one and not the other? I have a cable modem, what would you recommend purchasing and doing weekly or monthly for protection and maintenance?

Ok, here is my HiJack log......

Regarding your work computer:

* Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.

* Go to Windows update and install all "High Priority Updates".

* Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Regarding your home computer:

* I don't see anything really bad on this one. The online scan only found cookies. You probably just need to do some routine maintenance.

I would renew Spysweeper, but not Norton. To put it short and sweet, I don't like Norton and would never use it myself. I recommend that you uninstall it and get Nod32:

http://www.nod32.com/

In my opinion, it is the best antivirus you can get.

* Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall these:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

* Now go here and install the latest version of Java.

* Follow the directions at the link below to run Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm

* Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

* Restart your computer.

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the "Delete Cookies" button to clear all cookies.

** Before you proceed with the directions below you need to turn off SpySweeper's realtime protection as it will interfere with the changes we are trying to make.
  • Open Spysweeper and click on the "Options" button on the left.
  • Click on the "Program Options" tab and uncheck "Load at windows startup".
  • On the left click on the "Shields" button.
  • Click the "Internet Explorer" tab and then uncheck everything there.
  • Click on the "Startup Programs" tab and uncheck "Startup Shield"
  • Click on the "Browser Add-ons" tab and uncheck "Browser Helper Object (BHO) Shield"
  • Exit Spysweeper.
  • Leave them disabled until we are finished here.
  • Important! Make sure you remember to re-enable these options when we are finished.
* Now let's remove some of those startups. You have several apps loading at startup that do not need to. These apps load at startup and run all the time, even when you are not using them, using up your machine's resources.

Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by these:

SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_05\bin\jusched.exe

SoundMan SOUNDMAN.EXE

AlcWzrd ALCWZRD.EXE

Alcmtr ALCMTR.EXE

TkBellExe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

iTunesHelper C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

QuickTime Task C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe

MSMSGS C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

As an example, one of those that needs extra attention to be sure it doesn't run unless you want it to is Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger. Go through this check-list to make sure it doesn't run unnecessarily:

1. Open MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger and go to Tools >Options and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts" on the Preferences tab.
2. In Outlook Express, go to Tools > Options > General tab and uncheck the option to "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger".
3. Also in Outlook Express, go to View > Layout and uncheck the option to display Contacts. The program will open a connection and display a list of all Contacts on line if you do not.

Go here for info on msconfig:

http://www.pacs-port...artup_index.htm

You can look up the startups at the following links to help determine what is needed and what is not:

http://computercops....tartupList.html

http://www.bleepingc...r.com/startups/

http://www.answersth...es/tasklist.htm

http://www.windowsst...start=50&end=75

* Now follow the directions at the link below to defragment your hard drive:

Flrman1,

I just want to thank you very much for all of your help! I did all of that on my home computer, I still am not sure how to go in and make sure all of that stuff doesn't start up and run once I open the program or turn the computer on. I followed the instructions and all of that worked, but next time I ran real player I think it stayed running even after I closed it, not sure though.....I don't understand that stuff very well :whistling:

But thank you so much. I took Norton off and downloaded a 30 day trial version of nod32??? It hasn't done anything though and I can't find a way to scan anything with it. I will renew SpySweeper and actually purchase nod32 if that is what you recommend.

Thanks again and take care!

Do you have the latest version of Real Player? If you do, it shouldn't be a problem to keep it from loading at startup. What version do you have? 10.5 is the latest.

What do you mean Nod32 hasn't done anything? Do you see it in the System Tray running? If you go to Start > All Programs > Eset > Nod32, the scanner should open.
