A friend of mine has a HP Pavilion notebook, and the start menu won't load on his computer. When the computer starts, all the desktop icons appear, but the toolbar won't load. Also, when he tries to clip any program, they won't start. We cannot run any virus scans because of the computer's condition. Please help!

Hi michael84...

This is probably yet another case of the new Microsoft update gone wild (908531)...it's a bad one and is particularly rough on HP machines or those with HP software installed.

Use the System Restore to restore to a date before the problem began.

Then turn off "Automatic Updates". To do this, right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Click the "Automatic Updates" tab and tick the button by " Turn off automatic updates". "Apply" the change and click "Ok".

You should leave this off until at least the second Tuesday of next month when Microsoft releases their next updates. You may want to check back here before you turn it back on...I'm sure we'll know if it has been fixed.
