Hello,

I have a machine that is apparently infected with something. Cannot figure it out. Have followed all of the advice on the main page that says run all the programs and all have been cleaned, but i still have the problem.

Everytime IE is opened up, it goes to an about:blank page and then redirects to http://www.safetydefender.com/. I can go into Internet properties and change default home page and restart and it will revert back to this. searching thru the registry and deleting all the about:blank entries still does no help and it does the same thing. Also, there are two icons that appear on the desktop and the start menu. One is a blue shield with an ! that says "Online Security Guide" and the other is a green shield that says "Security Troubeshooting". I can delete all 4 of these icons but after reboot and restarting IE, they both reappear in their previous locations. Clicking either icon takes me to different web pages. Clicking the blue one takes me to http://realsecurityonline.com/ and the green one goes to http://youronlinesecurity.com/.

I have run the adawares and virus scanners and I also have Symantec 10.0.1 Corp Edition on this machine and still nothing. Here is the HijackThis log, so hopefully someone might have a better understanding of this. My brains fried and I cannot figure anything else out on this so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys.

First, I need yout to go here and upload a scan the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcomcfg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PCANotify.dll

Save the results of the scans and post them in your next reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and fix the following:
O3 - Toolbar: MSN Search Toolbar - {BDAD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - C:\Program Files\MSN Toolbar Suite\TB\02.05.0001.1119\en-us\msntb.dll (file missing)

And fix this if you didn't set it:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Exit HiJackThis.

Find and delete this file, if found:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmclk.exe

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Restart your computer and post a new HiJackThis log, the SmitfruadFix log, and the Jotti scan results. :whistling:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
