If i make the jump to AVG, can I still use Norton Security along with it, with the Norton Antivirus disabled? Would it work?
If I use AVG, do I even need Norton at all anymore?
(btw, I'm still having trouble turning Norton on)

Well, are you even paying for a subscription for norton? If you are not, just get totally rid of it and move to AVG!
