Download Process Explorer from Sysinternals
http://www.sysintern...ssexplorer.html

Extract, run.Go to VIEW > SHOW Fractional CPU usage
Make sure it is checked.

Look in the CPU column and relate what is consuming your CPU time

If you can a screencapture would be useful

.77 services.exe .77 explorer .77 sysinternals processes .77 deferred procedure...I don't know how to screen capture.

Sorry, I can't get that to work...

....it doesn't seem to be a cpu usage issue anyway. What is most annoying at this point is that after about an hour of surfing, I can't reach any more sites. It's as if something is preventing my internet access. It has happened while I was monitoring with Process Explorer, and the system idle is still really the only thing registering, there seems to be plenty of cpu and nothing else seems to be eating up space...It's like something is blocking the internet flow and I can't navigate to any place and my browser is all jammed to a standstill.

It happened with both explorer and firefox.

I ran virus scan again, and I come up clean.

Maybe this is something...I looked at "Javascript console" by accident (in Firefox) and there are all these errors--mostly bad selector, invalid rule set, parsing errors--declaration dropped, error in parsing value.

Also got "Curtains for window system service launcher NT has encountered an error and has to close."

Does this help at all???

Help, it's getting worse. I can only be online for about 15 minutes, then I get bottled up and can't do anything except unplug my connection. Sometimes I can't even get the computer to shut off.

Is there no solution?

I found this error log on my desktop. Does this help?

Nobody seemed able to help...I researched and found a lot of people with the same seemingly uninteresting, or unsolvable problem. So perhaps someone will come across this, and I will have helped them.

I think I stumbled on the solution (knock wood). I deleted Cox's virus software and reinstalled AVG, and
things seem to be better.

Now referring to:

"-----In safe mode:

Right click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, choose ADVANCED, choose the SETTINGS button in the Startup And RECOVERY section, and uncheck AUTOMATICALLY RESTART---------"

Can someone please tell me if I should go back and re-checkmark 'AUTOMATICALLY RESTART?' Does this
mean anything, or should I just leave well enough alone?

you do not need to reset it--automatically restart is not worth much in a home setting

Are you certain you reinstalled all drivers? What java virtual machine are you using--MS or Sun Java?

Trend Micro, or one of those on-line scanners led me into downloading Sun Java...and a virus turned up in the download. I removed the virus and Sun Java (I think). I suppose I still have MS Java, but I'm really not knowledgeable about all this. I certainly would like to be using the easiest and least problematic of everything!

Thanks, this is way complicated for me. There were a lot of warnings and a few errors in my event viewer...it was a little overwhelming.

I always update windows and I did go to my manufactorer's site and update all my drivers, and thankfully, my computer has not crashed in a couple of days. It might not be perfect, but at least it's working.

The most annoying thing was the inability to keep surfing, and that seems fixed since I dumped Cox's virus software.

the yellow warnings in my event log
