I recently had my hard drive whir, click and crunch (yes crunch) itself to death. :whistling:
Bought a new hard drive and installed Windows XP from the install disc shipped with my Dell.
I was able to install XP and my hardware drivers and other programs (WORD, Netscape etc)

When I tried to turn off the computer and restart, for changes to drivers etc to take effect,
I got a black screen with some copyright info and an animated rotating slash (/, --,\,|,/,--).

After about a minute the screen says "Boot device not detected. Insert cd and press F1 to continue.
Or press F2 to enter setup. "

I put the cd in and I get the Welcome screen and Windows proceeds to load. All programs work fine.
It's just not loading from the hard drive. What do I do?

Thanks in advance.

Hello farsidetoys...

Boot into the BIOS Setup and set the Hard Drive as first boot device. Does this allow it to boot to Windows?

The Hard Drive wasn't even listed.
It started up fine. Thanks for your help.

Now that it's on the list, where should it be in priority?
Should the Floppy be the first device?

Thanks again!

The preferred boot priority is:
  • CD-ROM
  • HDD
  • Floppy
Glad to help! :whistling:
