Please help me, I just turned on my computer and it will not boot.

It starts to load and a blue screen briefly flashes (I can't read what it says) and the it gives me the "We Apologize for the inconvienence, but windows did not start sucessfully" screen.

None of the Safe mode options work.

Starting from the last known good configuration will not work.

Starting windows normally will not work

It just won't boot.

What do I do? Please help.

Nothing major, I just surfed thed internet for an hour or two and shut it down.

Don't believe I installed or changed anything significant.

Now it won't start up.

I'm thinking about a repair install.

It seems to be the only thing that will boot.

Any Ideas? Anyone?

Windows XP logon screen does not appear and the computer continuously restarts

SYMPTOMS

When you start your computer, the Microsoft Windows XP startup screen appears, and then the computer may restart. The Windows XP logon screen does not appear.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Kernel32.dll file is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Windows Recovery Console to extract a new copy of the Kernel32.dll file from the original Windows XP CD. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start the Recovery Console. If you do not have the Recovery Console installed, start it from the Windows XP CD.

To do this, follow these steps:

a. Insert the Windows XP CD, and then restart the computer. If you are prompted, select any options that are required to start from the CD.

b. When the text-based part of the Setup program starts, follow the instructions that appear on your screen. To select the repair or recover option, press R.

c. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the recovery console.

d. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password.

2. At the command prompt, type cd system32, and then press ENTER.

3. Type ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old and then press ENTER.

4. Type map, and then press ENTER.

5. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD. It is appears in a format that is similar to the following format:

D: \Device\CdRom0


6. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

expand drive\i386\kernel32.dl_

Where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD).

For example, type:

Expand d:\i386\kernel32.dl_

Note Include the underscore character after the "L" in Kernel32.dl_.

You receive the following message: Kernel32.dll
1 file(s) expanded.


7. Type exit. The computer restarts.

8. Remove the Windows XP CD, and then start the computer as you regularly do.

I'm running the recovery console from the XP CD and running into a problem.

I'm not prompted for an administrator password, might be because I don't have one.

But anyhow, I get to the recovery console and it prompts me with "C:\>"

I can't figure out what to type there. several variations of cd system32 get me either "the path or file specified is not valid" or "the command is not recognized"

Am I doing something wrong?

It has a comma, did you try it with that?

with a comma I get "the path or file specified is not vaild"

I have a black screen that says "Microsoft Windows XP Repair console" at the top, I am at the reapir console, aren't I?

apparently CD is a valid command, I hit enter and the It prompts me with

C:\
C:\>

on two rows like that,
I've tried typing "system32" after C:\>, it just gives me the same message again.

It's been a while since I've had to work with the DOS type commands, I'm not sure why it isn't working.

Forget the comma then, go with space cd system32

You can use this guide to repair XP

Possibly, you will need to boot the PC and keep tapping the delete key until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need the XP product key to complete this

If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install

After running XP Repair you will need to install all Windows Updates

Ok, I still can't get it to work, I'm going to try the repair install

Are you using registry cleaners, you should not have to repair this so soon

This is an offchance but quick and worth a go

Start the System Restore tool at a command prompt

1. Restart your computer, and keep tapping F8 during the initial start-up until you get options, select Safe Mode with a Command Prompt then press enter.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Look for the most recent system checkpoint created before the errors to restore from

I did fix it by the way, napster had me download some update to the DRM,

I've made it to the third screenshot in the repair instructions, and I'm seeing something I haven't seen before. My Hard drive is divided into three partitions, I'm not sure if this is of any consequence, but I'll type what it shows

-: Partition1 [FAT] 47 MB ( 39 MB free)
C: Partition2 [Unknown] 71594 MB ( 71594 MB free)
E: Partition3 [FAT32] 4675 MB ( 367 MB free)

I'm assuming I select C:, but this is a bit strange as I didn't see these partitions before.
