I am at my parents house and we have netgear here. We have the router connected to the desktop and the pc card in my laptop. Whenever I connect to the interent via wi-fi, it slows the desktop's internet down dramatically. Not only that, but my internet is amazingly slow. So I've taken the router out and plugged my laptop directly into the dsl modem and I am still having a problem. It says that it is 100mbps but when I'm at school, it says the same thing and it isn't anywhere near as slow. Does it have something to do with what little space I have left on my computer or is it something else because I don't see why my computer would slow their's down so much. Thank you for your help to anyone.

Hi disturbd17,

The only reason I can think of for your computer to have such an impact on the Internet connection would be if you have a particular application (be it malware or something else) which could be hogging the bandwidth. If this is the case, it would slow down Internet traffic on your Home network; but the question arises as to why it wouldn't affect your School's network? Probably because your school's Internet connection would be far faster than your home's.

When at home, try restarting your computer into Safe Mode with Networking and then attempt to connect to the Network; is your connection still slow?

How to restart into Safe Mode with Networking
Please restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt and Safe Mode with Networking (along with a few others). Please tap the down key until you reach Safe Mode with Networking, and then press the Enter key. Your computer should now boot into Safe Mode with Networking.

If your connection is still slow, please goto Start --> Run --> type CMD and press OK --> Now type: netstat -es -- please copy/paste the results by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum.

Along with this, please goto Start --> Run --> type CMD and press OK --> Now type: netstat -- please copy/paste the results by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum.

Thanks,
Dan.

Sorry about the slow response -- Did you try restarting into Safe Mode? Was there any change?

Please download PingPlotter. Run it and perform a search to the following website: google.com -- Once it is finished, click on 'Edit', and then select 'Copy as Text'. Paste the results here.

Goto Start, Run, type CMD and press 'OK' - now type: PATHPING google.com -- please copy and paste the results by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', and then pressing the Enter key. Please post the results here.

Well if I run it in safe mode, the net is slow, but now that is all I have. I tried in normal mode and I cannot even connect to the interent anymore. The pingplotter results are:

You're definitely getting high ping-spikes, along with packet drops. Since you're now unable to connect in normal mode, I'd have to say that this is a software / malware problem.

Please download HijackThis. Execute hijackthis.exe and select the option Do a system scan and save a logfile. Once it's done, it will open up a file in notepad. Please goto File > Save As > Save it to an easy to reach location as hijackthis.txt --> Once done, please Attach the text file to your next reply. It may also help to do this process whilst in Safe Mode, along with Normal mode, and attach two text files.

Along with this, please generate an Uninstall list..

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
Thanks,
Dan.

I've attached HJT logs for both Normal mode and safe mode w/ networking. The two with "-normal" after the names are for the two with the normal mode. THe other two files are for the safe mode w/ networking. Thank you so much for helping again.

I would highly recommend that you follow all of the steps located here. These steps can clear up to 70% of all Malware from your computer; this will hopefully ensure that there is no Malware interfering with troubleshooting. Once done, you may also need to post a HJT log in the Malware Forum. Once you receive a clean bill of health from the Malware Staff, please post back here.

I tried www.dell.myway.com because it times the loading and it took 6.01 seconds to load, I've seen it much faster but maybe that's all I can get now.
Thank ya much

Sorry to keep you waiting.. And I'm afraid that you really need to post that HijackThis log in the Malware Forum, as I don't know what to look for  That log provides me with about as much information as it does you :whistling: So let's leave it up to the experts.

Right, I settled everything over there and they said they don't think it's malware anymore as I got all of it off the computer and the net is still slow. Any thoughts?

Glad to hear you got things sorted :whistling:

I think it might be a good time now to do a general clean-up, just to get your machine running at it's peak again -- *Note: These steps may take an hour or more, so ensure that you have plenty of spare time before continuing. It may also be a good idea to print these steps out, as you will often need to restart your computer.

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete

Click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD and Windows File Protection will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot

Click start then run, type chkdsk /f /r then press enter, type Y to confirm for next boot, press enter then reboot.

Windows will appear to load normally then either the monitor will show progress or the screen will go blank, do not disturb this. This will take an hour or so before it gets to the desktop.

Download and install
Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up

Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot. You should disable the antivirus programme to run this and check it is running after the reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Once done, please perform the following speed test -- Once it's done, it will display your upload and download speeds; please post this information.

Goto Start, Run, type CMD, press 'OK' and then perform a Trace route by typing: tracert google.com
Once the trace has completed, please post the results here by right-clicking on the window, selecting 'Select All', and then pressing the Enter key; post the results here.

Alright what I ended up doing is wiping out my computer, still somewhat slow. Better, but slow. Here's my speeds. What else can I do? Might it be the desktops fault we're still slow?
Last Result:
Download Speed: 126 kbps (15.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 129 kbps (16.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Alright so I did the same test on my parents desktop both in normal mode and in safe mode and got about the same average results. I guess that would explain why everything is so slow. Problem is, is that I am still not able to connect by just taking the cable from the modem and putting it in my laptop. It still gives me the Limited or No Connectivity message. What is going on?
