Word - Preventing automatically applied styles?

If I cut a few words from within a document (Word 2000) and paste them elsewhere in the document it can change to a seemingly random style. For example, cutting and pasting within a document that is entirely written in Arial 10, can result in Times New Roman 14 Bold!

Any ideas on how to stop this???
