Lost Outlook Express Msgs during Compacting

Was compacting all Outlook Express messages and decided to close OE hoping it would compact more quickly. Upon re-opening OE, many message folders were empty. Is there any hope of finding where they went? MS help is discouragingly vague on the subject.

System Restore made no difference.

by closing the program you in effect cause the process to quit instead of completing.
