You will need to make a copy of these instructions because you have to disconnect from the internet to complete the fix. Either print them out or copy and paste them into Notepad.

Preparation

1) Download the trial version of Ewido Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.
When the download has finished, locate ewido-setup.exe and double click it to begin installation.
** If you already have Ewido installed, update it and go to 2) **

In the 'Additional Options' window, uncheck:
'Install required for automatic updates (background guard)'.

When installation is complete, you will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
To do this:
Double click the Ewido Desktop icon.
In the main screen, on the left hand side, click Update.
In the following screen, click Start Update

A progress bar will show how the update is going. When it has finished updating, close it.

If you have problems with the updater, you can manually update Ewido.
Click
here and save ewido-signatures-full-current.exe to your Desktop.
All you need to do then is to double-click it, click Install and then, when it has finished, Close.

Ewido Anti-Malware is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
However, as the real-time protection may interfere with the fixing of your PC, this function will have been disabled as long as you followed the installation instructions correctly.
At the end of the trial period, Ewido will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal.
Should you wish to benefit from the real-time protection, you will need to upgrade the program. To do this, simply open it and click on the Buy now online button.

2) Download VundoFix.exe by Attribune from here and save it to your Desktop.

3) Create a folder in the root of your C: drive and name it Blacklight.
A brief explanation of how to do this can be found here.
Download F-Secure's BlackLight from here and save it into this folder.

4) You will need to set Windows to show All Hidden Files and Folders.
Instructions can be found here.
** These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

5) You will need to know how to boot into Safe Mode.
Instructions can be found here.

6) Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable for the duration of the fix.

Removal

1) Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less - Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click YES, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
2) Boot into Safe Mode.

3) Run Ewido.
Click on Scanner.
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says 'Perform action with all infections' then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report - click it.
Save the report.txt file to your desktop.

Now close Ewido Anti-Malware.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!

4) Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

5) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

6) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options and under Temporary Internet files, click on Delete Files...
Check the box to the left of 'Delete all offline content' and then click on OK.

7) Boot into Normal Mode.

8) Go to Start > Run, copy and paste the following into the text box and hit OK:
"C:\Blacklight\blbeta.exe" /expert

The F-Secure Blacklight Beta window should open.
  • Accept the agreement and click OK.
  • Click the Scan button to begin.
  • Leave the PC idle while the scan takes place.
  • When it has completed, click the Close button.
  • A text file, fsbl-date/time, will be saved in the Blacklight folder, copy and paste this into your next post.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt, the Ewido log, the Blacklight log, a new HJT log AND a description of how your PC is behaving.

Hello and thanks for your help.
I'm having some trouble though.

VundoFix does not find anything, and Ewido will not install.

I used Ewido once before and the trial expired, so this is probably that problem.

I AM still receiving pop-ups.

thanks!

You have a file, or files, on your PC that I would like to have checked.
Please go to Jotti's and click on the Browse... button at the top and navigate to the following file(s), one at a time, and then click on Submit:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmARP.dll

When all the scans have been completed, please copy and paste the results into your next reply.

If this site is busy, try VirusTotal: Click the Browse ... button at the top, navigate to the file and double click it. Then click the Send button.

Jotti's can get very busy unfortunately.

I'd like a copy of this file when we get it removed so please be careful with it! :whistling:

1) Download KillBox.zip by Option^Explicit from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s) from the zipped folder.

To do this: Right-click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the Extraction Wizard window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

You should now see the contents of the KillBox folder.

2) IMPORTANT
Close all other open windows and programs because this will require a reboot.

Double click KillBox.exe to run it.
Click the radio button to the left of 'Delete on Reboot', then 'copy and paste' the following line(s), one at a time, into the 'Full Path of File to Delete' textbox:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmARP.dll

After pasteing each line click on the red and white 'X' button.
First you will be asked to confirm that 'All listed Files will be Deleted on Next Reboot' - click on Yes.
Next you will be asked to 'Files will be Removed on Reboot, Do you want to reboot now?' - click on No until you have pasted the final line, then click on Yes

If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message, just restart manually.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Right click an empty area of your Desktop and from the menu that appears click New > Compressed (zipped) Folder - the default name will be fine.
If you go to C:\!Killbox you should be able to find a copy of atmARP.dll
Drag and drop, or cut and paste, the file into the zipped folder you've created.
Once you have done this open the folder, if it isn't already, and click File > Add a Password...
Enter infected (all lower case) into the Password: textbox, confirm it in the box underneath, and then click OK.
I would like you to email this folder to an address that i'll PM you with.
Please keep a copy handy though, just in case there's any problems.
Let me have a fresh HJT log and after a little tidy-up, you should be done.
The folder arrived safely, thanks, so you can delete your copy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

IMPORTANT
You are running HJT from an unsafe location - it should be placed in a folder of its own.
A brief explanation can be found here.
Please do this before you proceed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {29a9b2a5-b598-4383-8935-72c995aadf60} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmARP.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O20 - Winlogon Notify: atmARP - atmARP.dll (file missing)
CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As long as that goes OK, I think that you're done. I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days. When you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Update your anti-virus program,
Disable System Restore,
Boot into Safe Mode,
Scan your computer for viruses.
When you get the all clear, reboot into Normal Mode.
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point.
This will give a clean Restore Point should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.
