scanner problem

I have recently purchased a HP PSC all-in-one, and my computer will not recognize the scanner part of it. Everytime that I try to use the scanner, a message comes on saying that it isn't hooked up, or not turned on, but it is!!! I have reinstalled it, but it still says that it isn't there!!! Why won't windows XP recognize the scanner, but the printer will work??

HELP!

HP has a support page for this that is quite lengthy--have you seen this yet?

Is there anything there that you cannot understand?
