Hi, I've had pretty many problems with my computer in the last year or so. The most recent problem is that I can turn on my PC but my monitor won't work. I called up HP about a month ago and spent an hour on the phone with them and was charged like $50 but still have the same problem. Basically, when I called them, they had me turn on and then turn off my computer and monitor...a bunch of times. They also had me take of the back panel of my PC and made sure that everything inside was plugged in correclty. They also had me take out something... :whistling: (Don't laugh!!!) but it looked rectrangular...lots of copper looking wires. And then put it back in....and do all the restarting.....etc. Still my computer is not working. I thought maybe it was just my monitor but I took my PC to my parents' house and tried to see if it would work with thier montior and it doesn't . So basically I have a PC and it turns on....the fans etc...I don't hear any beeps........the light stays green.....the monitor clicks on (green light then goes to orange). and no picture....

Do you have any idea of what is wrong?
What should I do? The cost?
Would it be cheaper for me to just get rid of this computer and buy a new one?
How do I get my saved "word files" papers....for school....etc...for this broken computer...so that I can put them on a new one....or at least have them in a safe spot? (From now on I will save everythinig onto a disk)

The monitor is an HP Pavilion MX70
PC an HP Pavilion 513n/Celeron/1.8GHZ/256MB/60G
Both were bought in 11/02

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Hi Jamie
to get your documents etc

Remove the hard drive from your HP

Temporary change to slave setting from master

Attach it to another computer and you can retrieve all your docs easily

Temporary change to slave setting from master

What does that mean?

And is the thing that I described as retangular...with copper..etc....the hard drive?

Do you think it is better for me to get a new computer?

Sorry....don't know a whole lot about the insides of a computer......

The hard drive is a silver / grey rectangular box with a big flat grey/yellow ribbon cable and a smaller yellow black black red cable attached usually towards the lower font of case.

When you find the hard disk it has a diagram on it that shows how to do Master/Slave settings. It will be set to Master

I would think you were asked to check video card but I'm only guessing

If my computer that I have now has a virus...will that infect the other computer I insert my Hard Drive in?

What if I decided to go to a lab top?

Or

What if I decide to go to an Apple Computer?

Also again...do you think it is best for me to try to fix this one...or get a new one?

You dont have to worry
just make sure that the virus prog on the computer you connect to is up to date.
You can the sweep the hard disc for any virus.

If you get a laptop
then you could use an external encosure(usb) to do the document save

ithe brand makes no difference
