windows xp unexpected shut down

please help me out.
the problem is with my windows xp startup...each time when i start it , the desktops icons appear and then it suddenly shuts down(actually restarts)..at the restart it scans the disks and then starts like normal starup but again it shuts down as soon as the desktop appears..please help me out waht can i do about it.
