problem with pc restarting

Hi all,

I am hoping that someone can help me out here. I am running XP Pro sp2.

Over the last few days everytime i shutdown my computer, within 5 mins its restarts again. This have never happened before so I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me out?

There's a setting buried in Windows XP that tells your computer to restart when a system error occurs. If you turn off that option, you may solve your automatic reboot problem.


Click Start, then open Control Panel

Click Performance and Maintenance

Click System

Click on the Advanced Tab

Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section

Uncheck Automatically Restart in the System failure section

is this a permanent fix for this problem or is it only temporary? What sort of system error could of occured for this to have happened?
