LONG AND FRUSTRATING...

First had trouble with the 1.1 update installation. Downloaded it manually and got it to work. I have a Gateway PC by the way. Now I am getting a .Net Framework error when I try to download updates from the Gateway website. I have uninstalled and re-installed all .NET Framework programs with the same results. I have 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 on my PC. Microsoft said to contact Gateway since I didn't buy the PC from them. Gateway said to completely erase and restore Windows XP on my system, which I think is a little harsh at this point. They have no idea what is going on. Gateway doesn't have much technical help. The error message is as follows:

An unhandled exception has occurred in your application. (given option to continue or quit).'-1' is not a valid value for 'maximum'. 'maximum' must be greater than or equal to 0.

There is a details button on the error dialog box that reveals the following:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

Can someone help me find out what is wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

Do the Gateway updates depend on .net framework being installed

Yes they do. Their downloads are only supported by their own download assistant program. The download assistant runs on the .net framework application. I tried using stardownloader and it can't contact the host. When I try manually I get an internet explorer error that says "no such interface supported". This is pissing me off. They kept giving me the run around. They said no one was reporting this problem but me, and they can't help me fix their PC.

Uninstall all the versions of .net framework

Items in blue which are underlined are clickable to give more information about the process

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete

Click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD and Windows File Protection will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot

Download and install Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up

Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot. You should disable the antivirus programme to run this

Check the anti virus is running after the reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Use Microsoft Update to install .net framework 1.1, then the service pack then the hotfix

I have the Gateway cd that came with the computer. I need the XP Proffesional CD2. I don't have Windows XP Proffesional, does that matter? Where can I get a copy of that cd?
