Here's the situation. We have one phone line point in our house which is downstairs. However our computer is located upstairs. Currently we run an ASDL cable up the stairs to the PC (Desktop). Is it possible to buy a router which can plug into the phone point via a asdl modem and emit a signal to this computer?

Any wireless ADSL router will do.
You will also need a wireless PCI network card (available from any half-decent computer shop) to talk to the router.

All you do is feed the router your username and password, tell your desktop to log onto the router with whatever security key you set, and Bob's your uncle.
