Turn off the e-mail scanner and you should be fine. Which version and product(s) of Norton are you currently using?

Norton software is so invasive and bogs down computers that it should be considered malware. It often requires a special uninstaller to finally get rid of it on many systems.

I believe you would be much better off using the free AVG antivirus/email scanner and the free ZoneAlarm firewall. They are at least as good as Norton suite and much lighter on system resources.
