Ok, I was having serious problems, my computer was crashing every time I tried to get online. I got rid of everything new I had dl'd, disabled my firewall since it had just updated to a new version and nothing worked. Out of frustration ( i did all my scans, tried everything I could think of) I tried a sys restore. Wouldn't do it. So I gave in and did a sys recovery. I have a HP Pavalion a206x running win xp. When I was setting everything set back up I discovered the problem was my firewall, zone alarm, didn't agree with my peoplepc software. Ok, got a new firewall. But the sys recovery messed up a lot of things. Now I can't access Norton System Works, windows update, windows security center, or the automatic updates tab in system properties. Norton is workable, I had planned on trying to get a newer version anyway. But I'm stuck with windows as it was in 2003 and can't update anything. I go to windows update and it gets stuck on "checking if your computer has the latest updating software" Then nothing, it never searches for updates or anything. And I can't set up automatic updates. So what can I do to fix my screw up? :whistling:

The restoration version of Windows XP that you have installed does, or does not have Service Pack 2 installed?

Well, system properties says I have sp1 but I was just looking in add/remove programs and some sp2 updates are listed. So I'm not sure, really. The sys recovery was supposed to restore windows to factory settings but not mess with other files so would that include microsoft updates?
