I have never seen anything like this. I have Microsoft Spyware Remover (beta), Lavasoft, Spybot Search and Destroy, and a few other Adware Removers. I have McAfee AntiVirus installed and up to date. But I got nailed with something that evidently buries itself in IE Explorer. I have cleaned out VX2.DLMAX Trojan about 10 times, I have cleaned ABETTERINTERNET, ISVRS, ISEARCH, FARMMEXT, DELFIN, CERES, you name it I have (supposedly) cleaned them out. I've done this in regular mode, and is safe mode. McAfee keeps telling me it is cleaning out TEMPORA and VUNDO but it tells me this after every reboot. Whatever this is, seems to go away when I clean everything, only to come back with avengance when I hit IE EXPLORER. My browser gets Hijacked, and almost immediately MS AntiSpyware is removing one of the above after another. I have used HIJACK this and cleaned out the obvious stuff over and over. I must be missing something somewhere but I don't know where to look. Here is my latest HIJACK this log:

Any help would certainly be appreciated. I never heard of HIJACK THIS until yesterday when all this started and I couldn't get rid of it. I have followed along in several threads removing what I could based on what I was reading...but alas, all for naught.

Thanks in advance,

DSB

Dsb,
Sorry for the delay in responding. If you are still in need of assistance please download the latest version of HJT 1.99.1
HERE

Then post a new HJT log and we can get started.

Thanks,

Well - thanks for the thought anyway. While running McAfee my computer rebooted itself about a minute into the scan, and came up with the registry missing. Gone. Poof. Couldn't find a restore point. Ended up reformatting and reinstalling Win XP.

What a mess.

But thanks anyway, hopefully whatever this was won't strike me again!

Dsb,

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows security and critical updates.
http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

Internet Explorer security and critical updates.
http://www.microsoft.../ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thanks,
