Let's replace the registry hives... :whistling:

At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines exactly as they are below, pressing ENTER after you type each line (Note the spaces):

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart. Let me know when you have completed this.

Hello,

when I try any of these commands I get "Access is Denied"

I was never asked for a password.

I am going to see if I can make these changes from inside the knoppix os.
Otherwise, can you suggest why "Access should be Denied" inside the Recovery Console when I was never asked for a password in the first place?

PS thank you again so much for your help

Well, it's not looking pretty.

Knoppix lets me read the drive, but when I attempt to make the drive writable, it will not mount.
The Knoppix error is: "$logfile is too small, cannot mount"

So, so far, I cannot make those changes. Is there another "flavor" of DOS that can let me make these changes?

LET the cops get it repaired, by litigation if neccesary, they will then be less destructive when using other peoples property in the future. Let the city pay for it.
I realize you may not like that option but that's the one I'd take.

You are right Neilium,

However, I fear further repercussions against my cousin by the police.

Even if they don't officially harass her and her family, she does not want ANY further contact with them.

If it were my computer, I would go All the Way to make them pay !!!!!!!

And ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS..... ALWAYS; INSIST on a "Trial By Jury", NO Matter WHAT Recommendations you get from "anyone" !!!!!

And as far as the computer goes, I don't know what they did to it, but the Hard Drive is "loaded" with unrecoverable bad sectors.

I had to throw the drive in the garbage, after trying many avenues to try to recover it.

The computer now has a new drive and a fresh install of windows. Now I just have to find and fill this 13yr old boy's computer with some great games.

Thank You All for your input and suggestions.

Good luck to you all.

G'day J,
what a shame cops have no manners or skills with the public that they serve. I can understand your cousin not wanting any more contact, they seem to know just how to intimidate.

Bad deal all round.
Cheers Neil
