Why is my laptop taking over 10 minutes to start up?

Hello, I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and I am running Windows XP. It is extremely slow at starting up and also shutting down. I know it is pretty crowded in there and also a little old (about 4 years) but it seems that it shouldn't take so long to do these things. Anyone know how to fix this?
