I've done all the required steps with the exception of downloading windows updates. I can't get onto the internet because my network connections are being messed with & I can't solve it. The malware has messed with Norton's liveupdate, and it also is blocking me from manually updating the virus definitions. When I try to install another virus program, the malware corrupts the windows installer and prevents me from installing. It also puts me into the forced shutdown cycle (I know how to interrupt it) but everything I try, it's like the malware is one step ahead of me. I ran the HijackThis, but am not sure which of these processes is the culprit. I appreciate your help! :whistling:

Update Java to stop you getting reinfected.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Next we will do a scan then remove any remnants manually. Download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan and a new HijackThis log.

WOW. ewido found 125 instances of infection! I also found & manually removed 3 malware .exe files from the root directory of c:\ (I recognized the names from previous searches). It looks like the forced shutdown problem has been resolved, but it also looks like the system isn't totally clean yet. Here are the logs:

Did you quarantine the items with ewido? For some reason it says 'No action taken' Could you rerun it and make sure it removes the pests - post a new log from it when done. Also do this:

Go to Jotti's malware scan

Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\polymorph.dll

Click on the submit button. Please post the results in your next reply.

Repeat for this:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll

I NOTICED THE ERROR TRYING TO QUARANTINE 200] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll -> Proxy.Xorpix.z

My infected box doesn't have internet access, so I can't use your instructions to have the artm_new.dll or the polymorph.dll files scanned. Is there another option? I am unable to copy them to removable disk as they are in use, even when in safe mode. PLEASE ADVISE! thanks!!!!!!!!!!!1 :whistling:

Click here to download WinsockFix. Save it on a floppy and then transfer it to the hard disk of the affected computer. Extract the file from the zip and double click it to run it. Let me know if it helps with the internet access.

I NOW HAVE INTERNET ACCESS ON MY INFECTED BOX!
But when I tried to upload these two files:
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\SHARED DOCUMENTS\SETTINGS\ARTM_NEW.DLL
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\SHARED DOCUMENTS\SETTINGS\POLYMORPH.DLL
to Jotti's malware scan, this is the message I got for BOTH files:

Reinfected by it, even though ewido quarantined it. OK, let's do this manually. Click here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the red 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting each one:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\polymorph.dll

Click 'Exit' when done.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O23 - Service: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider (SwPrv) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllhost.exe (file missing)

Exit HijackThis when done. Reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok. Scroll down and find the service called "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok. Repeat for "COM+ System Application". Close any open windows.

Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Exit HijackThis when done. Reboot, rescan with HijackThis, post a new log here and let me know how it's running now.

OK, something keeps recreeating the C:\SECURE32.HTML reference in the registry. I did a search for the file paytime.exe but can't find it, so I'm wondering if there is a newer culprit causing this?

Anyway, here's the hijackthis log:

OK, since my last post, a couple of things have happened. Now that my system has been cleaned up somewhat, I was able to update my virus definitions for Norton Antivirus, and it detected the following items, which I deleted:

c:\Documents and Settings\Alice (Mom)\Local Settings\Temp\polB898.tmp
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SecTaskMon\ibm0004.dll.q_380DF200_q

Also, AVG did an autoscan. It found and deleted the following, which it identified as Trojan Horse Generic.WYR:

c:\Documents and Settings\Alice (Mom)\Local Settings\Temp\10F.tmp
c:\Documents and Settings\Alice (Mom)\Local Settings\Temp\110.tmp
c:\Documents and Settings\Alice (Mom)\Local Settings\Temp\11A.tmp

I then received your post, and ran the Silent Runners.vbs. Here's the log:

"Silent Runners.vbs", revision 46, http://www.silentrunners.org/
