I keep getting very random popups, at one point it was an Adware.Look2Me infection, and someother one that escapes me at the moment, I think the word Qool was in it though.. Removed both using their respective removal tools, and Ewido still finds traces of look2me... My bias on that fact is that I ran the look2me remover seconds before running an Ewido scan, and a .vbs script based of finding the file and deleting it and its reg while it was running. Anyways, heres my HijackThis log.

Hello Terror Train...welcome to G2G!

The L2M is still there...and you also have other malware on your system too.

Download L2mfix.exe from one of these two locations...
- http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

If you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like:

C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application..

Then please use "option #5" or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. Do not run the fix portion without fixing this first. After you have run "Option #5", use the instructions above run "Option #1" again.

Hello Terror Train....let's see if we can get rid of it now:

1. Make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into.

Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than a Temp folder. Suitable examples are:
  • C:\HijackThis\
  • C:\Programs\hijackthis\
  • C:\Windows\My Documents\HJT\
but feel free to use any name.

Extract and save the HijackThis download to the new folder you created. Then navigate to it and run HijackThis from the new location. This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if fixes are made and we need them.

If required, look at this Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

2. Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

3. Now, close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your Desktop, double-click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing "Enter", then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2Mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new Hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the PC has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't disappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2Mfix folder.

4. Post back with:
  • the L2MFix log
  • the HJT uninstall list
  • a new HJT log

Hello Terror Train....yes indeed, the L2M appears to be gone!

We do have a few things to do yet though:

1. You have BitTorrent on your system...while the choice is up to you, P2P/file sharing apps can be a source of malware and may increase your risk of becoming re-infected. I would recommend that you remove it, but that's up to you.

2. Your Java version is out of date, and the presence of old Java versions remaining on your system is a known security risk for malware.

Go here and download and install JRE 5.0 Update 7. Click the link that says Download JRE 5.0 Update 7. You will then need to select Accept License Agreement and click the Continue button that is beside it. Then click the link that says Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language. Save it to your Desktop. Then go back to your Desktop and double click jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe to start the install.

Once you have it installed, click Start>>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. From the list, uninstall J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0, Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02 and any other older versions of Java listed, leaving JRE 5.0 Update 7 as teh only version of Java installed .

3. Let's do one more online scan to see what it finds, if anything:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
4. Post back with the Panda ActiveScan results, a new HJT log and let me know if your computer is running without problems....

Hello TerrorTrain....

Actually all of the L2M found by Panda was in the Spyware Doctor quarantine folder...won't harm you there! You can empty the Spware Doctor quarantine folder and remove Killbox! from you system when we are done. The other entries Panda found were largely cookies and TIF's which we'll get rid of. We're getting there:

1. Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed files, then right-click to select them and click delete:

C:\Documents and Settings\John Page\Desktop\Click to Find and Fix Errors.url

2. Clear IE's Cookies and Cache
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
  • Go to Control Panel » Internet Options » General tab.
  • Click Delete Cookies.
  • Next to it, Click the Delete Files button.
  • When prompted, place a check in: Delete all offline content, click OK.
Clear Firefox' Cookies
  • Open Firefox.
  • Click Tools » Options.
  • Click the Privacy tab, then the Cookies tab.
  • Click the Clear Cookies Now button.
  • Then click OK to exit.
Clean Temporary Files
  • Go to Start » Run » type: cleanmgr » OK.
  • Choose (C:) and then click OK.
  • Make sure these are the only ones that are checked :
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Temporary Files
    • Recycle Bin
  • Click OK to remove them.
  • Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
3. I still see Java JRE 1.4.02 in your HJT log...did you remove it as I asked earlier, or was it not in the Add or Remove Program list?

Please click start>>run and type appwiz.cpl in the 'open' box. From the list, remove Java JRE1.4.02 if found. If it is not in the list, let me know.

4. Let me know about the Java entry, and let me know how your computer is doing...are you having any problems?

Hey Terror Train....that's great news! You are welcome and good luck!

Please review these steps below to finish up (do the system restore part) and help avoid an infection in the future!

Your HJT appears clean and I'm glad your system is running well with out problems!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!

Now let's reset your restore points.

Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.

Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:

    cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein. These are excellent reads too: I'm not pulling your leg and Malware: Preventing the Infection

Remember...be careful out there!
