I keep getting a Device installer error box inside the box it says "windows could not load the installer for Net. Contact hardware vendor for assistance."

I am running XP service pack 2, which came preinstalled; so I cant remove SP2--only the updates. This problem occurs anytime i have to install a driver and more recently, a windows update wont install due to this issue.

I have used system restore, but with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really dont want to
reinstall windows and go from there---

thanks in advance for any help.
