I ran the program...it took over an hour, so I went to bed while it worked and restarted when I woke up. The boot up time was cut down by about two minutes, but not that much. Boot time is now about 7-8 minutes. Is this as fast as it's ever going to go? Should I reinstall Windows XP?

I was 'bout to say, after reviewing all this... Easiest way to know if spyware or malware was causing the issue would be to simply check your cpu/mem usage once windows is up, if its abnormally high then yes...

BUT KEITH said exactly what i was about to say... ram handles a lot of the application loading and storing temporary information... It sounds like your RAM could either be bad ( have some errors on it ) or perhaps you need to reset it...

If you know about ram a decent amount. Try doing the following. Unplug your pc from power, Open your pc case up. Find your ram, take all your ram out.

Verify that your ram is all of the same frequency/mghz and type, 3200? 2700?

Take a pencil with a red eraser, and run the eraser gently across the pins on the ram, ( a way I saw to clean ram in pc magazine that is safe and effective ), blow out any dust in your machine, and plug ram back in.

Sometimes if your ram gets dirty, your system can go nuts and do random things with the amount of ram or how it runs.

Also check how hot your cpu is getting :whistling:.

AND RUN keiths memtest

oh yes, and go to google.com search cpuz download it, and post us a pic of what ram you have installed and cpu please :help:

Ran memtest for a few hours. It seemed to be doing the same test for the sixth time, so I stopped it. There were no errors. Boot time: 8 minutes.

Also, I've been requested to give system specs. Here they are:

SYSTEM:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

COMPUTER:
Intel®
Celeron® CPU 2.30 GHz
2.29 GHz, 760 MB of RAM

Depends on what you mean by tests. The tests that I saw went up to about 50 or so different numbers and letters, before reverting back to the first one again.

Are you saying that one set of 50 or so tests is actually one test, and I should have kept it running?

There are 7 numbered tests with progress bars, it would take an hour or so

After a short search on Google, I came across Microsoft's BootVis. I downloaded and ran the program as instructed, but after boot time optimization (where they strive for a 30 second "cold boot"), it still took 475 seconds (roughly 8 minutes).

Do you think that reinstalling Windows would fix this problem? I can't seem to figure out what the problem might be.

Any other ideas? :whistling:

The answer is probably not related to XP itself

This will remove all the updates and SP2 if it was downloaded, see how it is then

You can use this guide to repair XP

Possibly, you will need to press the start button and keep tapping the delete key, (possibly F2) until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need your XP product key to complete this

The XP Product Key is a 25 character alpha numerical code, which does not include the sequence OEM

If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install

XP Repair Install

Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system

The XP repair install will look and run as a normal install, however, you must not see a request to format the drive

After running XP Repair you will need to install all Windows Updates

Microsoft Update

Repaired XP, and the boot up process still takes about 8 minutes. :whistling:

That was what I was hoping would work....

Any other ideas?
