I installed SpyBot S&D and ran a check. Found many adware type of issues and "Fixed the Problem". Then I got an error upon restarting saying something about a RunDLL error........Wild Tangent....... So, I had to go back to the system restore point and reinstall Wild Tangent and now I have no error message.

Wild Tangent still appears every week when I run SpyBot.

If this is malware, why does it seem my laptop needs it to run? Why am I getting this error when I get rid of Wild Tangent?

Hi lanaferg. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned.* Please open My Computer
* Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
* Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
* Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Download Hoster.exe and save it to your desktop or a place that you can locate it later.

Step #3

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

Now we will remove some programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:* Click Start.
* Click Control Panel.
* Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
* Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:* Click on it to select it.
* Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
* If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.P2P Networking

Now start the Hoster program. Click on the Restore Original Hosts button. Click Yes or Ok to any prompts and when finished close the program.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Thanks again. This is my 3rd log. The icons on my desk top are hpothb07- there are three of them, when I open them it is for the Windows picture and fax viewer, the other one I have is a destop notepad- when I open it it for Windows media player.
I have spybot on my computer what is your opinion of it? And the Norton Antivirus, I kind of thought that I would be better protected, but not sure if I have everything installed correctly. We have comcast internet and they have this bar that pops up everytime you try to get onto a site, which is a pain. But anyways, I guess I can't complain, I had the comp. for about 4 yrs and this is the first real trouble I've had. Thank you for spending your time.

Hi lanaferg. Guess what? Your log is clean. Congratulations! How are things running? Are you having any problems? For the icons on your desktop you can delete them and then if you want them back find them on your start menu and hold the right mouse button down and drag them out onto the desktop. That way the names and icons will be correct for those applications. In regards to Norton, many of the problems you had are not considered viruses and so an anti-virus application will not catch them. They are considered "adware" which pops up advertizing. You will find recommendations for protecting your computer against adware at the end of this post.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IESpy-Ad. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

You should also have a good firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio Personal Firewall (both are free) and a good anti-virus application like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your system up to date and clean visit Windows Update monthly, run AdAware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Hi lanaferg. Yes, please post a log from the other logons on this computer. We hve removed the files for infection so it should not be starting up but there might still be registry entries that should be removed that point to it. I will review them when you post them.
