I installed SpyBot S&D and ran a check. Found many adware type of issues and "Fixed the Problem". Then I got an error upon restarting saying something about a RunDLL error........Wild Tangent....... So, I had to go back to the system restore point and reinstall Wild Tangent and now I have no error message.

Wild Tangent still appears every week when I run SpyBot.

If this is malware, why does it seem my laptop needs it to run? Why am I getting this error when I get rid of Wild Tangent?

Hello jrzgrl and welcome to the GTG forums. We need a HijackThis (HJT) log file to be able to analyze what is happening on your computer. If you do not have a copy of HijackThis or do not have the latest version (1.99.1) then download it from here: HijackThis_sfx.exe. Double-click on the file you just downloaded and click on the UnZip button to install the program.

Start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.

I will review your log as quickly as I can.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

This my scan report. I hope you can help me. I tried deleting the wild tangent but kept getting the error message above so I had to reset my computer to a earlier date to get rid of the problem.

Hi lanaferg. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Important
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned.* Please open My Computer
* Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
* Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
* Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
Step #2

Download Hoster.exe and save it to your desktop or a place that you can locate it later.

Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &iSearch The Web - res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML

These next items are fixes I recomment that you make:

P2P Networking is a file-sharing application that is most often installed without a users knowledge. It leaves your computer open to access from unauthorized users.O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
ALCXMNTR.EXE is a file installed along with Realtek audio products. It is spyware that is being used by Realtek to gather data about customersO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
WildTangent is a questionable application that has been purported to cause popup advertising on your computer.O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
The PowerReg Scheduler is installed by many companies as a registration reminder. It is not a required application and is believed to send information about your computer back to the company that installed it.O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

Now we will remove some programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:* Click Start.
* Click Control Panel.
* Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
* Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:* Click on it to select it.
* Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
* If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.P2P Networking
WildTangent

Step #5

Now start the Hoster program. Click on the Restore Original Hosts button. Click Yes or Ok to any prompts and when finished close the program.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\ <--folder (if you chose to remove it)
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\ <--folder (if you chose to remove it)

Next, let's clean up the temporary folders:* Click Start
* Point to Programs
* Point to Accessories
* Point to System Tools
* Click Disk Cleanup
* Select the following items and then click the OK button.* Temp Setup Files
* Downloaded Program Files
* Temp Internet Files
* Debug Dump Files
* Office Setup Files
* old chkdsk files
* Recycle Bin
* Temp Remote Desktop Files
* Setup Log Files
* Temp Files
* WebClient temp files
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

Hello again lanaferg. Things look pretty good now but it looks like I missed 1 item. I'll have you do another HijackThis scan and when you post back your new log also include the names of the dat files that are now on your desktop and I'll check them out.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ComcastSUPPORT] C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgkill.exe /cleaneahtioga /start
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here (along with the dat file names) using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

Thanks again. This is my 3rd log. The icons on my desk top are hpothb07- there are three of them, when I open them it is for the Windows picture and fax viewer, the other one I have is a destop notepad- when I open it it for Windows media player.
I have spybot on my computer what is your opinion of it? And the Norton Antivirus, I kind of thought that I would be better protected, but not sure if I have everything installed correctly. We have comcast internet and they have this bar that pops up everytime you try to get onto a site, which is a pain. But anyways, I guess I can't complain, I had the comp. for about 4 yrs and this is the first real trouble I've had. Thank you for spending your time. :tazz:

Hi lanaferg. Guess what? Your log is clean. Congratulations! How are things running? Are you having any problems? For the icons on your desktop you can delete them and then if you want them back find them on your start menu and hold the right mouse button down and drag them out onto the desktop. That way the names and icons will be correct for those applications. In regards to Norton, many of the problems you had are not considered viruses and so an anti-virus application will not catch them. They are considered "adware" which pops up advertizing. You will find recommendations for protecting your computer against adware at the end of this post.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IESpy-Ad. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

You should also have a good firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio Personal Firewall (both are free) and a good anti-virus application like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your system up to date and clean visit Windows Update monthly, run AdAware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

smacar01, please do not post to HijackThis logs if you are not authorized to do so. Doing this will get you banned from this forum.

Hi lanaferg. Yes, please post a log from the other logons on this computer. We hve removed the files for infection so it should not be starting up but there might still be registry entries that should be removed that point to it. I will review them when you post them.

Cheers.
