our business network was set up several years ago and I think we do not have enough switches and hubs or maybe need an additional server, I would appreciate any suggestions on how to improve the setup. We have had problems with workstations losing connection to the server. Most of the problems are in room #3

we have 4 workstations, os XP, pro. and 11 workstations, os 2000, pro. the server os 2003 server. Our cables are run through the ceilings and then down the walls to the computers.

workstation #1, room #1, 250' from server

workstation #2, room #2, 30' from server

workstation #3,4,5,&6, room #3, 40' from server

workstation #7, room #4, 30' from server

workstations #8,9,& 10 room #5, 50' from server

workstations #11,12,13,14 &15 are in same room as server

the server is connected to a router with a firewall for our broadband .

What we have now is workstations #1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,&10 are all connected to a hub in room #3

The hub is connected to a switch that is on the wall above the server.

Workstations #2,11,12,13,14, &15 are connected to the switch. The switch is then connected to a hub that is on a shelf above the server.

All computers need to have internet access and printer and file sharing.

I would recommend that you replace all of the hubs with switches. This will help with the network traffic since there will be no more broadcasts (Caused by the Hubs). You should notice that the network resousers access a lot quicker then before. Hope that this helps.

go for a large switch eg 32 ports. Will let you add more stations as needed. keeps the number down whic is heaps better
