resolution problems

hi i'm having trouble can anyone help me. i cannot change the resolution above 800 x 600 on my laptop. at first i thought it was a driver problem but apparently my drivers are up to date. i have tried everything i know including a system restore and nothing works. any ideas? u should know that this problem arose overnight. ( literally!!!)
