Please delete the following files:
C:\Setup.exe
C:\autorun.inf
C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Received Files\setup.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\setup.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Autorun.inf

1. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the contents of the quote box below into a new Notepad file. Save it with file name options.txt and save as file type: all files to your desktop.

RegSearch Options File

[Search]
autorun.inf[/b][/color]

[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLUI

2. Download Registry Search to your desktop.
  • Right click on the compressed RegSearch folder, and choose "Extract All". In the box that pops open, click "Next", then "Next" again, and then "Finish". You now have another RegSearch folder on your desktop.
  • Open the new folder, and double click on regsearch.exe
  • Click "Import" in the lower left corner and browse to the options.txt file that you just saved on your desktop. Do not choose the one in the RegSearch folder itself.
  • Click OK and Registry Search will scan your registry for the file(s), and a Notepad box will open with a report.
  • Please reply here with the entire contents of the Notepad file from RegSearch.

First
Sorry for taking so long to reply but I had to resit an exam :whistling:

Second
It seems that setup.exe & autorun.inf are appearing in the following folder too:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\
Third

Does this PC have multiple user accounts?

Yes

Fourth
In the previous post you posted

[Search]
autorun.inf[/b][/color]

Did you mean autorun.inf? I've done two searches, one with autorun.inf[/b][/color] and one with autorun.inf. Here are the results.

Today, my BitDefender AV, started to detect setup.exe as infected with Trojan.Zlob.Gen, so I made a full scan and these are the results:

BitDefender has detected them in System Restore, are they still present in the other two locations on your PC?

BitDefender has removed the infected files from here:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{71CC9CD8-6E19-49F6-B737-8CE541F5AD29}\RP173\

and they haven't reappeared but they are reappearing in
  • C:\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
and the AV is leaving the infected files there but I cannot delete (access) them. All I can do is send them to Qurantine.

1. BitDefender isn't detecting setup.exe as infected anymore :whistling:

2. Yesterday I've ran a Housecall scan and it detected two infected .exe files in the system restore folder so setup.exe is reappearing in the restore folder too (under a different name)

3. Here are the HJT logs of the other 4 user accounts; all, carlo, kurt & stephen:

Recently, I've noticed that a different setup.exe has appeared (in the same directories) which is NOT a virus.
  • File Name: Setup.exe
  • Size: 1,798,144 bytes
  • Size on Disk: 1,802,240 bytes
  • File Version: 4.6.2.0
  • Description: TomTom Setup Application
  • Author's Rights: Copyright © 2001-2004 TomTom B.V. - The Netherlands - E.U.
I wonder what it is? :whistling:

Hi help_me_pls,

I will be taking this topic over from Vikesrock8411. Please give me some time as I want to review this topic from the beginning.

As for Tomtom, looks like it's a car navigation system, does that ring a bell?

http://www.tomtom.com/

While I'm reviewing the topic, I would like you to run a program which will show us if any other files are being created at the same time.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Ok, see what I found:

http://www.sarc.com/...echnicaldetails

Copies itself to all mapped network drives.

We will have to turn off file sharing.

To disable simple file sharing, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
4. Click OK.

Next,

Go to the Start menu and select the Control Panel.
In the Control Panel window, double-click on Network Connections.
Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon in the window that appears.
From the menu which appears, choose Properties (use the left mouse button to make your selection).
Under This connection uses the following items, highlight File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. Note: If File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is not listed, then file sharing was not set up on your computer. You may close any open windows and skip the rest of these instructions.
Click Uninstall.
When you are asked if you are sure you want to uninstall File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, click Yes.
Click OK or Close to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.

Then delete these files:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\setup.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\setup.zip ZIP
C:\Documents and Settings\stephen\My Documents\Programs\setup_ares.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\stephen\My Documents\My eBooks\jokes.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Kurt\My Documents\Programms\setup_ares.exe
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\riched20.dll
C:\setup.exe
C:\autorun.inf

Go to Start > Run and type:

sc delete BOONTY

Then delete this folder if it still exists:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\BOONTY Shared

Navigate to these files:

C:\WINDOWS\choice.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\deposit.dll

and please post the version info of those files, I'd like to know if they are legit. The other setup.exe, the tomtom one, is it also coming back after deleting? (if you haven't yet, try deleting it also)

Let's see if they will still come back after turning off file sharing.

3. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.

I cannot find it

Under This connection uses the following items, highlight File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks...
Click Uninstall.

I have two PCs (WinXPHome-Host & Win 98-Client) connected with a crossover cable and using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). The WinXP PC has a printer (parallel port) connected to it, I'm affraid that if I uninstall File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks I wouldn't be able to share the printer, do I? :whistling: As an alternative, I can stop sharing my harddisk or at least don't let other network users to modify any files.

Note: I haven't done anything yet.

C:\WINDOWS\choice.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\deposit.dll

and please post the version info of those files, I'd like to know if they are legit.

  • File Name: choice.exe
  • Size: 21,312 bytes
  • Size on Disk: 32,768 bytes
  • File Version: n/a
  • Description: n/a
  • Author's Rights: n/a
  • File Name: deposit.dll
  • Size: 10 bytes
  • Size on Disk: 32,768 bytes
  • File Version: n/a
  • Description: n/a
  • Author's Rights: n/a
The above two files don't have any file version or descriptions.

The other setup.exe, the tomtom one, is it also coming back after deleting?

Yes, but there is always one setup.exe at a time, either the tomtom one or the malware.
