Thank you in advance for any help you can send my way for these problems...

I'm using XP PRO, Service Pack 2, no multiple users, IE browser version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158

No matter how many times I remove the following three listings from the hosts file, they instantly reappear:

69.20.16.183.autosearch.msn.com
69.20.16.183.search.netscape.com
69.20.16.183.ieautosearch

I have run Ad-Aware SE 1.05 (with all the suggested tweaks, including the one that supposedly locks the host file after it is cleaned), and no matter what, those three listings return.

I get a lot of browser popups. At first, the top frame bar of each window refers to a www.loadingwebsite.com site.

I have run SpyBot S&D 1.03 many times, and those same hosts appear -- two of them under hijacks and one under IGetNet. No matter how many times I clean them from there, they instantly reappear. The report from my last Spybot scan is at the very end of this message.

I have run a full Norton Antivirus 2004 scan many times, and nothing is found.

I have run CWShredder 2.13 and no matter how many times it scans & cleans my computer, it always finds the following variants over & over:

CWS.BootConf
CWS.Svchost32
CWS.Look2Me

I have run VX2Finder but it doesn't find any files, and it doesn't seem to find the "Guardian" folder in the registry, although it does find a string.

And every time I start up the computer, there is a RUNDLL exception error, listing a file that changes its name everytime and is nowhere to be found on the computer!

Here is the HijackThis log that I've just run...followed by the SpyBot report, with hopes that you can help me sort this all out.....

mangoesbananas,
I will be reviewing your HJT log. Please follow the instructions exactly as posted.
Try to limit your Internet access until we can get this resolved.
Once we get the VX2 infection under control then we will clean up what's left.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Thanks,
rstones12

P.S.....by the way, does it matter that the l2mfix scan only took a few seconds? The only reason I ask is because you said it would take 1 to 2 minutes.

mangoesbananas,

Now we need to do the next part of the fix.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Thanks,
rstones12

All right nice job.

I will post back shortly with the next part of the fix.

Remember, try to limit your Internet usage until I post back.

Thanks,

[B]P.S. - I just noticed a change in Add/Remove programs that wasn't there before I did the last couple of logs. Something called "Web Search" that I never could remove isn't there anymore, and now there is something new called "Uninstall 180 Search Assistant". Is this because you're peeling back the layers of spyware? Or, is because this stuff is coming in on its own.

I understand the importance of leaving the computer disconnected from the internet, but the problem is I'm currently in New Zealand connected to the problem computer via Remote Desktop Connection, which is how I'm hoping to solve all the problems. Am I trying to do the impossible, or is there still a way for us to do this like this?

Many thanks again,

Michael

mangoesbananas,

OK, here is the fun part :tazz:

Please print out these directions or copy it to the notepad and save it to your desktop.

Go to your task manager, you can right click on your task bar then select Task Manager.
End these processes if found. You will get an warning message, click yes to end process.

wsxsvc.exe
vmss.exe
180ax.exe
xwxnwhcw.exe

Go to your Start | Control Panel | Add-Remove Programs
Remove the following item if found or any variation:

SurfSideKick
Delfin Media Viewer
EBates Money Maker
WebRebates
IMISERV
180Solutions

Close all browsers and open windows.
Scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items, dont fix anything just yet. (This is why you need to print these direction out and follow along)

Make sure you have no browsers or open windows except HJT then click "Fix Checked"

Enable Hidden files and folders:
Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Reboot into Safe Mode: You can do this by tapping the F8 key while your system starts up. This will take a little longer so be patient.

Do a search on your system and remove the following folders/files if found:

C:\winxp\180ax.exe <-- File
C:\WINXP\sixtypopsix.exe <-- File
C:\gjyver.exe <-- File
C:\WINXP\farmmext.exe <-- File
C:\winxp\system32\xwxnwhcw.exe <-- File
C:\WINXP\mm15201518.Stub.exe <-- File
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2\Ssk.exe <-- Folder
C:\WINXP\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe <-- Folder
C:\WINXP\system32\vmss\vmss.exe <-- Folder
C:\WINXP\wupdt.exe <-- File
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0.exe <-- Folder
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2\Ssk.exe <-- Folder

wsxsvc.exe <-- File
vmss.exe <-- File
180ax.exe <-- File
xwxnwhcw.exe <-- File

Now scan with your:
Anti-Virus Program
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot S&D

Remove anything they find:

Delete your temp files:

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty Your Recycle Bin.

Reboot normally and post a new HJT log by using Add Reply:

Thanks,
rstones12

Greetings once again!

I have gone through half of your list...and I am just about to have HijackThis fix the items you suggested.

By the way, after first doing the uninstalls through Add/Remove that you listed, there are some things that you've listed for HijackThis that aren't in the Hijack report. I assume that is normal. These are the things that aren't there....

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CA0E28FA-1AFD-4C21-A8DC-70EB5BE2F076}
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2\SskBho.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [motoin] C:\WINXP\mm15201518.Stub.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 2] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dvx] C:\WINXP\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vmss] C:\WINXP\system32\vmss\vmss.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINXP\wupdt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0] C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 2] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2\Ssk.exe

Also, there are about 7 "R1" and "R0" entries in the Hijack list...all referring to websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch...etc. They don't sound good, but since you didn't mention them, I've left them there.

Lastly, xwxnwhcw.exe and farmmext.exe keep coming back into the Hijack list no matter how many times I keep fixing them....they seem to trade off appearing. And I notice that xwxnwhcw keeps coming back into the Task Manager right after I end-task on it!!!

And the following entry keeps coming back into the Hijack list too: O2 - BHO: CeresObj Class - {00000049-8F91-4D9C-9573-F016E7626484} - C:\WINXP\ceres.dll

And....the "R3" entry that you listed wasn't there. The only "R3" entry in my list says, "Default URLSearchHook is missing".

And there was a discrpancy with the following item that you asked me to fix: 16 - DPF: {62475759-9E84-458E-A1AB-5D2C442ADFDE} - http://a1540.g.akama...meInstaller.exe --(instead of "meInstaller.exe", this was actually "QuickTimeInstaller.exe" and I "fixed" it anyway)

Oh...one question: I notice that the 69.20.16.183 hijacks are no longer in the HijackThis list. Were they fixed wtih the l2mfix? The reason I ask is that is, even though the 69.20.16.183 hijacks would be recreated everytime I tried to delete them, at some point, I edited the "hosts" file by adding a "127.0.0.1 69.20.16.183" entry to supposedly block the 69.20.16.183 hijacks, but I can't remember when I did that. Should I try to go back to a clean "hosts" list?

In any case, after doing the fixes on the hijack list, I will shut the computer down and take a break, because I am operating the problematic computer remotely, I cannot work on it in SafeMode, so I have organized with a friend to be at the house where the computer is in about 12 hrs. from now, and I will be on the phone with him telling him what to do in Safe Mode.

Bottom Line: I won't be able to get back to you till 14 hours from now with the results from all of this. I hope you don't mind.

By the way, even though 180 SearchAssistant showed up in Add/Remove, it wouldn't let me remove it. A box would come up saying that the uninstall required the computer to be connected to the internet and to click "YES" if it was. Of course, that sounded dodgy, but since you said to uninstall it, I clicked on YES, but then nothing happened for a good 3 minutes. Actually, Add/Remove froze and I had to end-task on it. I tried again, and the same thing happened, so I left it there. I've just found a tool on Symantec's site to remove this very piece of adware, so I've run the tool and hopefully fixed it. Here is the log that the removal tool produced:

Symantec Adware.180Search and Adware.NCase Removal Tool 1.0.5

So, that's where things stand at present. If you have any other advice before we do the Safe Mode steps in 20 hours time, please feel free to let me know. Many thanks for all. Oh, just for the heck of it, I'll paste in the latest Hijack report....

Micheal,

Make sure to have the latest and updated versions of:
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot S&D
Norton Anti-Virus

Go to your Start | Control Panel | Add-Remove Programs
Remove the following if found or any variation:

SideSearch
Ebate MoMoney Maker
WebRebates

Scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = hxxp://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = hxxp://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = hxxp://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = hxxp://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = hxxp://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = hxxp://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
I removed the "tt" in http for security reasons

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: CeresObj Class - {00000049-8F91-4D9C-9573-F016E7626484} - C:\WINXP\ceres.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [farmmext] C:\WINXP\farmmext.exe

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)

Close all browsers and open windows except HJT and then click "Fix Checked

Enable Hidden files and folders:
Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

This is the important part
Reboot into Safe Mode: You can do this by tapping the F8 key while your system starts up. This will take a little longer so be patient.

Do a search on your system and remove the following folders/files if found:

C:\WINXP\farmmext.exe <-- File
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker <-- Folder
xwxnwhcw.exe <-- File

Thanks,

Okay, other than not finding any of the three programs you listed in Add/Remove, I’ve done everything else in your last post. When we got into SAFE mode, the only item not found was:

C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker

Also, along with the following file: C:\WINXP\farmmext.exe, there was also a farmmext.ini file, so we deleted both.

And, there were two instances of the following file: xwxnwhcw.exe – one in system32, and the other in the prefetch folder. We deleted both.

We then ran the Norton, Ad-Aware and Spybot scans in SAFE mode

And then we emptied all the temps, tifs, and recycle bin, as per your instructions, and then rebooted into normal Windows mode.

After all of that, the latest HijackThis log follows below.

Oh, by the way, even though the Norton Symantec 180Search removal tool got rid of the software, there is still an entry in Add/Remove for “Uninstall 180Search Assistant”. From what I’ve learned, it is a trick entry…when you click to remove it, a box comes up saying you need to connect to the internet, and when you click “YES”, it loads the program again. For safety’s sake, are you able to tell me how to remove this entry from Add/Remove without triggering a new download of the software?

Also, the Norton scan came up with 75(!) at risk items...including all the HijackThis backups! And Ad-Aware and Spybot came up with stuff never found before on the system. Does this process you'll leading me through unpeel layers off to expose old unresolved issues?

Okay…here is that HijackThis log…and, as you can see, there is still an “04” entry for xwxnwhcw.exe

Micheal,

Just a few thing left to do:

First Download this:
CleanUp
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

This is a tool for cleaning up temp and other files on the system
This one however is a little more advanced, but pretty straight forward.
Dont run it yet.

OK now on to the next item on the agenda.

Again we will have to go into Safe Mode to fix this.

Scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xwxnwhcw] c:\winxp\system32\xwxnwhcw.exe

Next go to the Config Button on the Main HJT screen.
Then click on Misc Tools | Delete file on Reboot

Select ONLY the file

c:\winxp\system32\xwxnwhcw.exe

HJT will give you a message if you want to reboot the system, say no right now.

Next click on Fix Checked

Delete your temp files:

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Hi again. Thanks for all the additional instructions in your latest string. I will do what you've suggested tomorrow, and then submit the HJT.

By the way, just so you know, I've just run a full system Norton scan in normal Mode, and it finds the following adware threats (WINXP is the name of my Windows folder):

C:\WINXP\mm15201518.Stub.exe
C:\WINXP\sixtypopsix.exe
C:\WINXP\unstall.exe
C:\WINXP\system32\vmss\vmss.exe

And when I tell Norton to delete them, it says it can't.

Thanks for all and have a good night.... :tazz:
